Glen "Poncho" Newburn



   Glen S. “Poncho” Newburn, 85, a lifelong resident of  Wister, OK passed  from this life to be with his Lord and Saviour Thursday, May 30, 2013 in Ft. Smith, AR.  Glen as born June 20, 1927 in Wister, OK to Charley & Helen (Myers) Newburn.  
   Glen married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Boyer on December 27, 1945 and shared 56 years before her passing in 2002.  Together they raised 2 children, Glenn E. & Carolyn Ann.  Glen proudly served his country as a member of the Army Air Corp during WWII and was stationed in Japan.  He was a member of the NRA and the American Legion for over 50 years and started the Honor Wall of American Veterans at Bev’s Diner in Wister.  He was a member of  the Bethel Baptist Church in Wister and was a deacon for 59 years.  Glen retired from  the Oklahoma Dept. of Transportation after 35 years and served on the Wister Fire Dept. many years before retiring.  Glen was known for his piano playing and at the age of 19 sat in with Bob Wills on three different occasions.  Glen was loved and will be missed by many.  One of his main philosophies of life was, “When you leave this life how do you want to be remembered?”.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dale & Junior; wife, Mary; and grandson, Bradly Thompson.

   He is survived by his son Glenn & Janice Newburn of Red Oak, OK; daughter, Carolyn Newburn & Walter Folsom of Wister, OK; grandchildren, Joe & Stacy Newburn and children, Aaron  & Kodi; Bryan & Ola Thompson and children Miki, Hailey & Brad; and granddaughter, Randi Thompson; great grandson,  Jamin Thompson.

   Services will be 2 pm Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Bethel Baptist Church, Wister, OK with Rev. Clyde Steelman officiating.  Interment will follow in Maxey Cemetery, Wister.  Pallbearers will be Steve Walden, Lanny Akers, Otis Sloan, Bill Bullard, Mac Essman, Bob Almon. Honorary pallbearers will be Lonnie Wooten, Warren Wann, J.D. Delap, Ike Caudell, Jerry Nelson and Bob Odell.

The family  will be at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6-8 pm to visit with relatives & friends.
