Eunice Turman



 Eunice Irene (Camp) Turman died peacefully after a long illness on August 31, 2012.  Eunice was born January 27, 1913 in Greenwood, AR to Matthew Madison and Ida Mae (Caldwell) Camp.  She moved to Poteau in 1927.  She graduated from Poteau High School in 1931.  On March 31, 1934, she married the love of her life Woodrow Wilson Turman.  As a member of the First Baptist Church of Poteau, she taught church school for many years.  She was involved in the 20th Century Club, the Garden Club and the Camera Club.  She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, traveling, reading and crossword puzzles.  Eunice was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters and six brothers.

Survivors include her son, Woodrow Turman, Jr. of Shreveport, LA; her grandsons, John Turman of Oklahoma City and Steve Turman and wife, Julie of Poteau; many nephews and nieces; and her special friend Sharon Preston of Tulsa.
 The family thanks the many friends and caregivers who allowed Eunice to live independently for the past ten years.
           Services will be 2 pm, Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Poteau.  Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery, Poteau.  In lieu of flowers the family requests that you consider donations to the First Baptist Church.

Vivian L. Duboise


 Vivian Lorene Duboise, 94, of Shady Point, OK passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2012 in Shady Point.  Vivian was born November 26 1917 in Cameron, OK to Luther & Francis (Tucker) Bridges.  She was a homemaker.  Vivian lived most of her life in the rural area of Cameron.  She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.  She and Rosser Duboise were married May 26, 1934 and were together until he died December 2, 1989.  Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Rosser; grandson, Dean Currens; her parents; stepfather, Charlie Mooneyham; great grandson, Zack Moore; 3 brothers, Bob, Clyde & Otho Mooneyham; and special friends, Claude & Inez Farrar.

She is survived by 3 daughters & sons in law, Betty Ann  & Leo Burden of Upland, CA, Gloria Jean & Johnny Currens of Shady Point, OK, Katie & Larry Sockey of Pocola, OK; son & daughter in law, Paul & Margaret DuBois of Cameron, OK; granddaughter, Virginia Ann & Doug Moore of Austin, TX; 7 Grandsons, Wayne & Susie Currens of Poteau, OK, Randy & Lettie Burden of Upland, CA, Bill & Angie DuBois of Mustang, OK, Joe & Trisa DuBois of Shady Point, OK, Mike & Kristi DuBois of Blanchard, OK, Jon & Kelly Sockey, Ronnie & Mindy Sockey of Poteau, OK; 17 Great Grandchildren; 7 Great Great Grandchildren; 2 sisters, Elizabeth Farrar and Mattie Lee Fox of Cameron, OK; 1 brother, Bill & Lucille Mooneyham of Poteau, OK; 1 sister in law, Mary Mooneyham of Torrance, CA;  her many special “adopted kids” that she hauled to Sunday School & Vacation Bible School; other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

Services will be 2 pm, Friday, August 31, 2012 at the Liberty Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Caughern and Travis Cook officiating.  Interment will follow in New Providence Cemetery, Slatonville. OK.   Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Liberty Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 25952 Claudes Rd, Cameron, OK  74932.

The family will be at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-8 pm to visit with relatives & friends.

    Verna Louise Durant, 74, of Poteau, OK passed away Friday, August 24, 2012 in Tulsa, OK.  Louise was born June 12, 1938 in Poteau, OK to Gaylon Clayton & Verna Linamae (Allen) Cooper.  She was a care giver and a seamstress.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter Durant and Henry Troutman; and her parents.

Opal Jean Davis


 Opal Jean Davis, 100, of Poteau, OK passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2012 in D’Iberville, MS.

Opal was born August 8, 1912 in Gilmore, OK to Charles Monroe & Jenny May (Smedley) Harrison.  She was a farmer.  Opal was preceded in death by her husbands, David W. Dunivent & O.C. Davis; her parents; brothers, John, Edmond, Dency, Cecil & Eugene Harrison; sisters, Mary Lettman, Jewel Allen & Lorene Mabry; daughter, Shirley L. Ethridge; and grandchild, David Ethridge.

Juanita Hargrove


Ina “Juanita” Hargrove, 93, of Poteau, OK passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012 in Poteau.  Juanita was born to Bill & Etta Crane on May 1, 1919 in Monroe, OK.  Juanita was a graduate of Monroe High School Class of 1938.   She was a  long-time member of Trinity Baptist Church in Poteau.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Loschel Hargrove; her parents; 3 sisters; and nephew, Charles Farrell.

Survivors include her nephew, Harold Garrison of Long Beach, CA; sister in law, Grace Boggan of Fort Smith, AR; cousin, Benny Crane of Wilburton, OK; special friend, Lois Mitchell of Poteau; other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

Services will be 10 am, Monday, August 27, 2012 graveside at Monroe Cemetery, Monroe, OK with Rev. LeRoy Billy & Rev. Jim Cook officiating.  Interment will follow.

Dorothy Josephine Midgley, 90, of Wister, OK passed Thursday, August 23, 2012 in Fort Smith, AR.  Dorothy was born November 1, 1921 in Wister, OK to Jim & Pauline (Carpenter) Casey.  She was a homemaker.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charley Midgley; granddaughter, Janice Couch; sister, Lucille Midgley; and son in law, Jimmie Martin.

Mental Lillian Balentine,93,of Wister died Thursday, August 16,2012 in Poteau, OK.
Mental was born October 19,1918 in Lone, AR, to Benjamin Wann & Luella (Farmer) Wann. Mental was a housewife who loved to visit with family and spoil her nieces and nephews. She worked many years operating an insurance agency and was a avid gardener who loved to grow beautiful flowers in her yard. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, Wister.
Mental was preceded in death by her first husband, Luther Wedge, then by her second husband, Fred Balentine; no children were born to either marriage. 6 siblings, Reathel Andrews, Ruthie Gatlin, Rotha Balentine, Farmer Wann, Coolidge Wann, Gaylord Wann; She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ben & Luella; sisters and brothers in law, Ruthie & Hosea Gatlin, Rotha & Baysul Balentine, Reathel & Clayton Andrews; brother & sister in law, Farmer & Wilka Wann; brothers, Gaylord Wann & Coolidge Wann; niece Nelda Clark & nephew Wayne Andrews. Adrian Smith, 63, of Shady Point, OK passed away Saturday, August 11, 2012 in Fort Smith, AR. Adrian was born September 2, 1948 in Stillwater, OK  to Farley Deshong Smith & Odessa Johnson. Adrian was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam. He was the past Mayor of Shady Point for over 10 years. Adrian was preceded in death by his father Farley Smith.

Patsy G. Bottoms,75, of Poteau, OK passed away Friday, August 10, 2012 in Fort Smith, AR.

Pat was born December 31, 1936 in Poteau, OK to Robert Cleo Jones & Ada Christeen Qualls. Pat was a housewife and she loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. She loved to tell stories and spend time with her family. Pat loved to attend church and going to singings with her two buddies Jan Cook & Twalla Robison. Ruby loved her babies…and everyone else’s! She loved to crappie fish. She was a resident of Medi-home Nursing Home of Arkoma, OK for 4+ years and roomed with older sister.

David P. Burch


David P. Burch, 64, of Shady Point, OK passed away July 27, 2012 in Fayetteville, AR.  David was born August 24, 1947 in Shady Point, OK to Rowland & Freda (Anderson) Burch.  David was a veteran of the US Army and served in Vietnam.  He was a Power Plant Turbine Floor Operator.

 James Junior Hanna, 72, of Panama, OK passed away Sunday, August 5, 2012 in  Fort Smith, AR.  James was born August 11, 1939 in Williams, OK to Arthur and Muriel Hanna.  James was a retired mechanical technician with Gerber, Inc. in Ft Smith, AR.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; his parents; and sister, Irene Hodges.

Darla Renee Trammell, 41, of Lewisville, TX (formerly of Heavener, OK)  passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2012 in Lewisville, TX.  Darla was born May 1, 1971 in Dumas, TX to Joe & Janice (Kiefer) Trammell.  She was an accountant.  She was a graduate of CASC, Poteau, OK and Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK.  Darla was preceded in death by her grandparents, James & Ada Trammell, Loten & Sarah Kiefer; cousins, Noah Laurent, Mandy & Robyn Simmons, Traci Trammell-Hudson.

Fred J. Kerksiek, 74, of Poteau, OK passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2012 in Fort Smith, AR.  Fred was born November 27, 1937 in Wakeeney, KS to Henry & Minnie (Wrightmire) Kerksiek.  He was a veteran of the US Air Force. He was a mechanic.  Fred attended the First Free Will Baptist Church in Poteau.  He was preceded in death by his father and his wife, Beatrice.  He loved gardening, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his daughters Toni Kerksiek of Poteau, OK, Theresa Kral of Mansfield, AR; grandson, Grant Kirksiek of Baltimore, MD; sisters, Shirley Rice of Pueblo, CO, Henrietta Helming of Grand Lake, CO and Nancy  Braden of Parker, CO; brothers LeRoy Kirksiek of Colby, KS, Carl Kirksiek of Greeley, CO; his mother, Minnie Kerksiek of Strasberg, CO; other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

Jane Hammond



Jane Hammond, 85, of Poteau, OK passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012 in Poteau. Jane was born September 14, 1926 in Springfield, MO. Jane graduated high school from Purcell, OK and she attended one semester at OU after marriage. She married Kenneth Jack Hammond on March 30, 1946. They were married for 66 years. Jane was also known as JJ. She was an active member of the Republican Party. Jane was a member of the Methodist Church. She was the best hostess for all family and friend gatherings. Jane is preceded in death by her parents Pruitt & Pearl White, brother Rex White and his wife Betty. 

Survivors include her husband Kenneth Jack Hammond of Poteau, OK; son and daughter in law Ken & Susan Hammond; daughter Kay Brown;  daughter & son in law Kimberly & Don Campbell; sister Kenna Lou  O’Reilly of Springfield, MO;  6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren.

 Memorial Services will be 2:00pm Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Poteau, OK. with Rev. Kyle Clark officiating.

Thomas Clifton “T.C.” Fortner, 86, of Monroe, OK passed away July 28, 2012 in Poteau, OK.  T.C. was born July 6, 1926 in Monroe, OK to Thomas & Leona “Lona” (Anderson) Fortner.  He was an insurance adjuster.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Clara Murphree & Jerry Miller; 2 brothers, V.I. and Edward Fortner, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Fortner; 2 sons, Larry and Tommy Fortner; 4 grandchildren, Amy, Shayne, Jason, Christy; 7 great grandchildren, Lexxi, Dalton, Dillan, Destiney, Dawson, Tucker and Payton.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

David Burch


David Burch, 65, of Shady Point,  OK passed away Friday, July 27, 2012 in Fayetteville, AR.  David was born August 24 , 1947 in Poteau, OK to Rowland Burch and Freda Anderson.  He was a Turbine Floor Operator for the Power Plant. He also served in Vietnam. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Sherrie of the home; Mother Freda Bandoni of Poteau, OK;  son & daughter in law, Damon & Melissa Blair of Edmond, OK; Daughter & son in law, Kerrie &  Marcus Blair of Shady Point, OK. 5 grandchildren, Lucas Blair, Samuel Blair, Joshua Lathrop, Josie Lathrop, Jordan Lathrop; Sister, Diane Puryear of Eureka, CA
Interment will be at the Ft. Smith National Cemetery.

Juanita Peters


Juanita (Brown) Peters, 85, of Poteau, OK  passed away Friday, July 27,2012 in Poteau. Juanita was born September 18, 1926 in Bengal, OK. Juanita was a housewife and a Leflore County Tag Agent. She loved to attend Poteau Pirate football and basketball games. Juanita truly loved her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Guy T. and Ida (Porter) Brown; husband Bill Peters; brother Guy L. Buddy Brown; sister Wanda Austin.; brother in law Odie Peters; 1 sister in law Beverly Peters; Grandma & Grandpa. Survivors include her son Billy Gene Peters. 4 sisters Anna Creamer, Ida Reed, Mary Powledge, Nancy Montoya. 1 brother James R. Brown; Sister in law Thelma Griffith. Services will be 4pm Saturday in Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau, OK. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau, OK .
