Carrel Leslie Vaughn of Wister, OK passed peacefully on March
20, 2016 in Fort Smith, AR. During his final days, he was surrounded by family
and friends. Carrel was born on February 15, 1936 in Lone Star (Wister), OK to
S.J. ‘Buck’ and Elva Vaughn. He grew up with his brothers Harold and Jimmy Dale
Vaughn, both preceding him in death. Carrel was 80 years of age upon his
passing. He had enjoyed 60 years of marriage to his wife, Ramona Wooten-Vaughn.
Carrel and Mona were blessed with four children who remain
in the Wister community: Brenda and Bobby Cockburn, Kathy and Bob Craig, Rick
and Sarah Vaughn, and Lisa and Ronnie Smith. He has multiple grandchildren
including Clint and Jessica Vaughn, Breann and Phillip Lathrop, Heath Smith, Chad
and Allie Craig, Brittany Cockburn, and Ashley and Brandon Benson. He also has
multiple great-grandchildren including Cole and Caleb Vaughn, Brooklynn and
Audrey Lathrop, Paityn Nowlin, Wyatt Benson, and Jack Craig.
Carrel was a leader within his community serving as County
Commissioner for thirteen years, President of the Commissioner Board for nine
years, member of the Keddo Board for six years, member of the Eastern Oklahoma
Medical Center Board for seven years, and member of the Board of Health for thirty-one
years. In addition to his community leadership, Carrel also enjoyed camping,
fishing, and raising cattle. Carrel was a strong Christian man whose final
wishes were to instill faith in his friends and family. He will be missed
dearly by many.
Services will be 2 pm, Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Wister
Public Schools with burial following in Ellis Chapel Cemetery, Wister, OK. Pallbearers will be Rocky Crane, Ryan
Williams, Terry Covey, Charles Claiborn, Bud Morgan, Lance Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Walden,
Sam Walden, Phillip Lathrop, Heath Smith,
Clint Vaughn, Chad Craig.
The family will be at the funeral home on Tuesday evening
from 6-8 pm to visit with relatives & friends.
