Ruth Laverne Wasson passed from this life on September 3,
2015 at the age of 83. She was a resident of Elmcroft Assisted Living Center
for the last five years.
Laverne was born in Wister, OK to Lowell and Flora Newby.
She was the only daughter, with four brothers, Joe Carl, Kenneth, Ray, and
Marvin. She graduated from Fanshawe High School, and was married to Kenneth A.
Wasson in Wister, OK on March 26, 1956. They soon moved to New York, where
their two children, Curtis and Cynthia were born. She lived in New York,
Florida, and finally moved to Azle, TX in 1976, where she resided until her
move to Austin.
Laverne was a beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother.
She was a quiet and kind soul, who delighted in her home, family, church and
friends. Wherever her husband’s job as an engineer called him to be, she worked
hard to make a happy home. She was known for her outstanding fried chicken,
pecan pies, and learned to piece quilts later in her life. When they moved to
their “farm” in Azle, she joined Kenneth in raising chickens, pigs, corn, and
anything else he decided to turn his hand to, taking it all in stride. She will
be sorely missed.
Laverne was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth A.
Wasson, her parents, and her brothers Ray Newby and Marvin Newby. She is
survived by her children Cynthia Baird, Curtis Wasson and wife Sally, her
brothers Joe Carl Newby and wife Karen, Kenneth Newby and wife Verna,
grandchildren Sarah Shull and husband C.J., Stephanie Baird, Marilyn Wasson and
Julia Wasson, and great-granddaughter Grace Shull.
Funeral arrangements are through Evans & Miller Funeral
Home, Poteau, OK 918-647-2238. Graveside services are Friday, September 11, 2015 at 10 a.m., at Fanshawe Cemetery,
Fanshawe OK. Memorial contributions in Laverne’s memory may be made to Fanshawe
