Johnny
Wayne Currens, 80, of Shady Point, OK passed away Saturday, March 9, 2019 in
Ft. Smith, AR. Johnny was born May 22, 1938 in Panama, OK to Dan & Mary
(McNabb) Currens. He attended Panama
Schools from 1st thru 12th grades. He received his Bachelor & Masters
Degrees from Southeastern State in Durant, OK.
Johnny married Gloria Jean DuBoise in 1957 and that began their 61 years
together. Johnny started his teaching
career in Baker, MT in 1958, followed by Atwater, CA; Greeley, CO; Hasting, OK;
Salina, KS and then Baldwin, KS where they lived for 20 years. They moved back to Oklahoma to help care for
family in 1983 where he worked as principal of the middle school in Pocola, OK
until his retirement. They enjoyed
living in different parts of the country but Oklahoma was ‘home’. Johnny also started an income tax business
in Kansas when he was 27, which he continued until retirement. He enjoyed meeting people and loved helping
everyone. He was preceded in death by a
son, Dean; who passed at age 11; brother, Dan Waren and sister, Eunice.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria of
the home; one son, Wayne of Poteau; 3 grandchildren, Kristopher Currens, Zack
Smith & Myra McBride; 3 great grandchildren, Keian, Landen and Rune; one
brother, Kenneth and his wife Helen Currens; one sister, Mary Sue & husband
Louis Dorey; one sister in law, Lucille Currens.
Services will be 2 pm, Wednesday,
March 13, 2019 at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau, OK with Pastor Leonard
Presley officiating. Interment will
follow at Shady Point Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Paul Duboise, Larry Sockey & Kristopher Currens
& Bill Holstead. The family will be
at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6-8 pm to visit with relatives
& friends.
Johnny was well known and loved by
many – and will be truly missed. In
lieu of flowers donations may be made to Liberty Hill Baptist Church Building
Fund.

I am saddened to learn this and extend my deepest sympathy to Mr. Currens' family. I was in his last Baldwin, KS Junior High Algebra class. Mr. Currens had a great sense of humor using green giraffes, pink elephants and Pepsi to explain solving equations. I'll never forget Halloween trying to drink a large Pepsi through the tiny slit of my ghost costume as my twin brothers and I visited with him on his front porch. He was an impactful teacher and I am most appreciative of fond memories.

I remember Mr. Currens from Pocola Jr High. He was always very kind to me. As your family deals with this loss may you find comfort from the Bible promise of the wonderful time when Jesus will call our dead loved ones back to life. This promise is recorded in John 5:28,29 along with the assurance that the enemy death will one day be no more (Revelation 21:3,4; 1 Corinthians 15:26) May your memories along with these words sustain you during the difficult days ahead.
