My great aunt Jean was an important part of my life as a kid. Summers in Poteau, Oklahoma were always exciting because we got to stay at Aunt Jean and Uncle Wayne's house. She had the coolest house full of the most interesting things. From her gorgeous backyard and garden to the room full of different sitting room sets to the playroom with toys straight out of Mary Poppins; it was one of my favorite places to be. Jean was the classiest and so beautiful, like an old movie star. My uncle Wayne met her in Paris during the Korean War and she brought a sophisticated, Parisienne spirit to her small town life. And she had the warmest heart. Though I hadn't been down to see her in a very, very long time, I'll always cherish my time spent at Aunt Jean's. And I think now I need to make some of Jean's Three Bean Salad she gave me the recipe for and that I've made for so many of my own gatherings with people I love. Tomorrow my family says goodbye to Jean and I wish I could be there but instead all I can say is "Au revoir, repose en paix."
