Jerry Herbert Harmon

Jerry Herbert Harmon, 81 passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021 in McAlester.

On January 11, 1940 in Tuscaloosa, AL, during a black out Jerry Herbert Harmon was born to Roscoe & Jewell Harmon. Jerry always had a soft spot in his heart for his mother.  Jerry loved animals and learned at a  very young age to trap squirrels, raccoons, lots of animals.  He was a   kind loving person.  He always helped his dad building houses.  Then got a job at Winn Dixie Store making making a quarter an hour; later he got a job as an usher at the theater at $1.25 hour.. (big money).

As a child he and the neighbor kids would go down to the “swamp” with a watermelon that they put in the water to cool off until they were finished playing.  He always had a fondness for convertibles (owning a 2002 corvette/convertible-now).   He could fix just about anything; always fixing and selling cars.  In 1958 he enlisted the US Air Force and was sent all over the world.  When he lived in Thailand he had house servants that he was paying a quarter a day each until the major confronted him that his servants were making more than he (the mayor) was so he had to drop their wages to a nickel a day.  Jerry had his  monte carlo shipped over there and but had to remove the tires every night so they wouldn’t be stolen.        While in Thailand he traveled back and forth to Vietnam instructing in aircraft maintenance.  Jerry retired from the military in 1978 with total disability.

Jerry  is survived by his wife, Debbie; 3 sisters, Gloria, Glenda and Trisha; 3 brothers, Ronnie, Grady & Daniel; 3 children, Susan Elizabeth, Steven Michael, Sharon Elaine from North Carolina; 2 stepchildren, Sara Jo Hash, Ross Hash; numerous grand and great grandchildren; other relatives, loved ones and friends.

          Private services will be held.
