Joseph Haberland



Joseph Haberland, 73, of McCurtain, OK (formerly of Claremore, OK) passed away August 18, 2013 in Poteau, OK.  Joseph was born May 29, 1940 in Glen Cove, NY  to Stanley & Gertrude (Dudkiewicz) Haberland.  Joseph or “Hammer Down” was a heavy equipment operator & a rancher.  Joseph was preceded in death by his parents.  Joe was known as a hard worker and a joker by many but most important to him was FAMILY.  There was not always much time between work and ranching but he always found a way to show his children he thought about them all the time.  It might include a trip, just with Dad, to an out of the way restaurant or a new set of tires so we could travel safely to come see him. Grandchildren gave him new life and reasons to offer soda and donuts for breakfast - a grandkid favorite. A ride on the tractor or fishing with "Papa Joe" was such a special treat that he shared with his grandchildren.  His legend as a hard worker and love for the land and heavy machinery will live on through his kids and grandkids.



Survivors include his wife, Opal Flagg of Claremore, OK; daughters, Dr. Carolyn Sue McGuire & husband, “Utah” Geoff of Orem, UT, Lisa Janine Floyd & husband Byron “Bubba” of Ft. Gibson, OK; son, Joseph David Haberland & “favorite daughter in law” Gretchen of McCurtain, OK; stepchildren, Richard William Flagg of Claremore, OK, Sherry Gay Prather & husband, John  of Waco, TX & Dawn McHenry of Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren, Kassia, Kian, Kadyn, Kambry, Kolton “Captain Jake”, Aidan, Zander, Zachary, Levi, Vanessa, Derek, Kendall, Micah, Lauren; sister, Diana “Babe” Wenrick of Anchorage, AK; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives & loved ones; and many beloved friends.



Services will be 10 am, Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Evans Chapel of Memories with Father Gregory Luyet officiating.  Interment will be in Old Bokoshe Cemetery, Bokoshe, OK.  Pallbearers will be Sonny Tackett, Eddie Cooper, Gary Kates, Randy Emerson, Joe Henderson, Fred Wegert.  Honorary pallbearers will be Phillip Arter, Woody Johnson & R.C. Culwell.



The family will be at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5-7 pm to visit with relatives & friends.

Leonard Perkins



Leonard L. Perkins, 79, of Pocola, OK passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2013 in Ft. Smith, AR.  Leonard was born September 15, 1933 in Pocola, OK to Buddy A. & Millie L. (Phillips) Perkins.  He worked in sales.  Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sue; sister, Linda Bly and 2 infant brothers.

Survivors include his sons & daughters in law, Keith & Connie  Perkins and Jesse & Cheryl Perkins of Pocola, OK; daughter & son in law, Donna & Wesley Riggs of Pocola, OK; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Odessa Baxter of Pocola, OK, Kathy Perkins of Kansas City, MO, Lorene Williams of Lawrence, KS; other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

Services will be 10 am, Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Evans Memorial Chapel, Pocola, Ok with Rev. George Barham officiating.  Interment will be in Steephill Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

The family will be at the funeral home in Pocola on Friday evening from 6-8 pm to visit with relatives & friends.

David Lee Spurlock



David Lee Spurlock, 35, of Sallisaw, OK passed away Monday, August 12, 2013 in Sallisaw.  David was born June 14, 1978 in Colorado Springs, CO to Rory & Lettie Belle (Bailey) Spurlock.  He was a veteran of the US Army.  David worked in construction.  He was preceded in death by his mother and brother, Jermiah Ray Spurlock.  In Loving Memory of my husband AKA “Bubbies” and the greatest father – Rest in Peace now baby. You don’t have to hurt anymore! We Love You!!

Mary Lou House, 69, of Heavener, OK passed away Sunday, August 11, 2013 in Heavener.  Mary was born July 24, 1944 in Big Cedar, OK to James Lewis & Allie Elizabeth (Roberts) Branscum.  She was a dietary specialist at EOMC.  Mary was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jeffery Stewart;  5 sisters and 2 brothers.

  Betty L. Shockley, 77, of Poteau, OK passed away Saturday, August 10, 2013 in Poteau.  Betty was born January 2, 1936 in  Clint, TX to Jesse B. & Bernice (Frey) Nichols.  She was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her facebook friends and researching family genealogy.   Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin E. Shockley; her parents; and sister, Evelyn Nichols.  

Survivors include her sons, Monte Sr. & Rita Shockley of Poteau, OK, Jeff & Connie Shockley of Poteau, OK; daughter, Mary & David Peevy of Alma, AR; grandchildren, Monte Jr. & Ashley Shockley, Brooke & Paul Mason, Sarah & Levy Adcock, Tyler Shockley, and Taylor Shockley; great grandchildren, Joel Mason, Jenna Mason, Morgin Shockley, and Annistin Shockley.

VERNON WARD



    Vernon Ward, 87, of Fort Smith, AR (formerly of Shady Point, OK) passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013 in Van Buren, AR.  Vernon was born August 11, 1925 in Tahona, OK to Marion Benjamin & Mary (Miller) Ward.  He was a veteran of the US Army serving WWII.  He was a teacher & administrator for close to 40 years, working in Bartlesville, Panama, Shady Point, and Pocola.

Nyla Shepherd


Nyla M. Shepherd, 92 of Ft. Smith, AR (formerly of Poteau, OK) passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013 in Ft. Smith.  Nyla was born December 8, 1920 in Sallisaw, OK to John & Ellie (Head) Shepherd.  She was a bookkeeper.  Nyla was a devout Catholic.  She was a member of the Franciscan Order in New Orleans, 3rd Order.  She received the honor of being Volunteer of the Year in New Orleans for her work with the homeless.  She lived to serve her God and her church.

Survivors include her daughters, Yvonne Ramos of Palacios, TX, Helen Wilson of Dallas TX; son, Charles Wilson of Boston, MA; sisters, Jean Brantley of Alamogordo, NM, Betty Rice of Heavener, OK; niece, Nadalyn Jaegar & husband Lloyd of Poteau, OK; sister in law, Betty Shepherd; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

Rosary will be held at 6 pm, Thursday, August 08, 2013 at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau, OK.

Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. – Friday, August 9, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church Ft. Smith, AR  with Father Gregory officiating.  Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Poteau, OK.

Sue Dorey

Retha Sue Dorey, 74, of Poteau, OK passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013 in Poteau.  Sue was born July 22, 1939 in Idabel, OK to Marvin & Floy (Matthews) Whittington.  She was a Licensed Practical Nurse.  Sue was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Jack Whittington.

Survivors include her husband, Rob Dorey of the home; 3 daughters, Susan Hacker of Poteau, OK, Melissa Jeanette Dunn of Pocola, OK, Tracy Dorey Rhodes of Gun Barrel, TX; 2 sons, Douglas Felker of Rattan, OK, Wayne Felker of LeFlore, OK; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 4 brothers, Buzz Kennon Whittington, George Whittington, Charles Whittington and Tim Parker all of Redland, OK; other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

Woody Turman



Woodrow Wilson Turman, Jr ( Woody) died peacefully after a short illness on August 1, 2013.  Woody was born in Poteau, OK on July 16, 1939 to Woodrow  and Eunice  (Camp) Turman.  He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Earlene Turman Alexander.  He is survived by his sons John Turman of Oklahoma City, OK and Stephen Turman and wife Julie of Poteau, OK;  stepchildren Stephanie Carbrey of Morris, IL, David Carbrey of Ft Smith, AR, Bobby Pipes and wife Tiffany, Daleesa Evans and husband Robert; grandchildren Bo Pipes and Brooke Evans all of Shreveport; and his former spouses Karen Turman of Ft Smith, AR and Nancy Putnam of Shreveport.  A memorial service will be held at Evans Miller Funeral Home in Poteau on Wednesday, August 7 at 2pm.

Karen LeFlore, 48 of Poteau, Oklahoma  passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013 in Poteau.  Karen was born August 4, 1964 in Owensboro, Kentucky to Leslie R. & Margie (Ferguson) Brumley.  She was a homemaker.  Karen was preceded in death by her parents.

Helen "Joyce" Manis



Helen ‘Joyce’ Manis, 79, of Poteau, OK (recently of Lakeport, FL) passed away Thursday, July 25, 2013 in Poteau.  Joyce was born March 10, 1934 in Lynch, KY to Dewey & Opal (Hogg) Owens.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim Manis; 2 children, Judy Arlene Creech & Gary Walter Creech; brother, Ralph Owens & granddaughter, Kathy Michelle Creech.

Survivors include her daughter Deborah (Sissy) North of Lakeport, FL; son, Aaron Terry Creech & wife Michelle of Poteau, OK; 3 grandchildren, Richard North, Ryan North, Shelly (Creech) Akins; 15 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

Memorial service will be held at Point of Light Fellowship in Lakeport, FL.

LARRY WAYNE DAVIS

Larry Wayne Davis,  63 of Roland, OK  passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2013 in Ft. Smith, AR.   He was born on January 15, 1950 to Minnie "Wilmuth" Sandlin in Poteau, OK. Larry was a great father and husband, and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amber Renee, his mom, Wilmuth Sandlin, and his father Willard Davis.

Larry is survived by his wife, Sandra, of Roland, OK, his sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Norman Christopherson of Roscoe, IL,  his son and daughter-in-law, Jody and Christy Davis of Owasso, OK, his grandson (and apple of his eye) Ethan Davis, his Aunt, Armalee Jones of Leflore, OK, and by countless beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.    Additionally, Larry is also survived by his "brothers and sisters" from several church families, including Gospel Tabernacle in Poteau, OK, and Living Water Fellowship in Roland, OK.   Larry is also survived by all of those from his EOMC family, most of whom he worked with for decades during his 36 years at EOMC in the accounting and payroll department.

He is loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him and his kind, gentle spirit.

Services will be 2 pm, Monday, July 29, 2013 at Gospel Tabernacle in Poteau, OK with Rev. Sonny Daniels & Rev. Andy O’Neal officiating.  Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Poteau.  Pallbearers will be Nick Vincent, Bob Hayes, Carl Daniels, Owen Dean Tabor, Darrell Tabor, Norman  Christopherson.  Honorary pallbearers will  be Charles Hayes, Paul Tolbert, Rick Walden & Bud Hatley.

Steve "Bubba" Carter








Steve (Bubba) Carter, passed away July 24, 2013 in Fort Smith, AR, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born on April 4, 1951 in Fort Smith to Cody Calvin and Minnie Belle Carter, who have predeceased him.  He was an active member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Poteau, OK, where he was a member of the Church Band.  He was employed in auto sales at J. Pauley Toyota for many years.

A 1969 graduate of Northside High School, he was a star athlete in football; winning  State Championships in 1967 & 1968.  He also excelled in track holding Arkansas high school records for many years.  Steve was inducted this year, along with his brothers, David & Roger, into the Northside Athletic Hall of Honor.  He went Arkansas Tech, where he continued his athletic career; competing as a sprinter in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Billings, MT in 1972.  He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Arkansas Tech in 1973.  He was a volunteer for the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Clubs for many years as a football and baseball coach.

In the early 1980’s, Steve & friends, formed the band, Mr. Cabbage Head & The Screamin’ Radishes, which became one of the premier bands in the Southwest.  The band is still together today, giving of their time and talents to several charitable organizations, and are well known as a true friend of the community of Fort Smith and surrounding areas.  The band has been highly recognized and has received many awards for their charitable work.  Bubba will be truly missed as the “front man” of this great band.

Of all his accomplishments, however, Steve would tell you that his greatest were his two sons and being “Pa Bubba” to his two precious granddaughters.

Steve is survived by two sons, Chris Carter and wife Tama, and Brad Carter; two granddaughters, Kalyn Carter and Mattie Carter; and the mother of his children, Pam Carter.   He is also survived by three sisters, Lila Carter Mackey and husband Gene, Becky Carter Walker and husband Chip, and Donna Carter Payne and husband David; three brothers, Richard Carter and wife Saundra, David Carter, and Roger Carter and wife, Cheryl; aunts, uncles, several cousins, nieces, nephews, and more friends than anyone could hope for a lifetime.

Service will be held at Community Bible Church of Fort Smith, 9201 S. Dallas St,  11 am, Monday, July 29, 2013 with Barry Reel and Jerry Jennings officiating.  Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Ft. Smith.
Bubba will lie in state at Evans & Miller Funeral Home in Poteau until Sunday afternoon.
Visitation will be 2-4 pm, Sunday at Fentress Funeral Home, Ft. Smith.

 Wanda Sue Mahan, 69, of Poteau, OK  passed away Monday, July 22, 2013 in Poteau.  Wanda was born October 25, 1943 in Poteau, OK to William Robert “Rob” & Pearl Lucille (Dedmon) Cooper.  She was a retail clerk.    She was preceded in death by her parents, Rob & Pearl Cooper; and brothers, Bobby Cooper & Jerry Cooper.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne of the home; daughter & son in law, Nikki  & Warren Kester of Poteau, OK; grandson, Jacob Kester of Poteau, OK; 3 brothers & sisters in law, Joe & Betty Cooper, Ronnie & Beverly Cooper Dickie & Anna Cooper of Poteau, OK; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

      Marshall Wayne Knox, 52, of Roland, OK passed away  Friday,  July 19, 2013 in Roland, OK.  Marshall was born June 2, 1961 in Oklahoma City, OK to Raymond D.  & Billie Sue (Pate) Knox.  He was Self Employed in  Auto Recovery Services.   He was a loving father & grandfather.   He was also devoted to all his family including his nieces & nephews.  Marshall was preceded in death by his parents.

Ernest Wesley Jenson, 86, of Wister, OK passed away July 13, 2013.  He was born June 12, 1927 to Howard & Lahoma (Webb) Jenson in Poteau, OK.  Ernest was a graduate of Poteau High School and served in the Navy during WWII.  He was owner and operator of Jenson’s Furniture in Wister until his retirement in 1982.  He was one of the five who founded the Wister Fire Department and also served on the Board of Directors for Wister State Bank.  Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Reba Sherrod.



Survivors include his wife, Elnora Jenson of the home; 2 daughters, Bobbie Vinson of Wilburton, OK, Terrie Wells & husband, Danny of Denison, TX; grandchildren, Jeremy Vinson & wife, Amanda of Wilburton, OK, Lacy Russell & husband Andy of Sherman, TX and Jackson Wells of Denison, TX; 4 great grandchildren; other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.



Services will be 2 pm, Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau, OK with Rev. Jim Cook & Dennis Lungstrum officiating.  Interment will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Monroe, OK.  Pallbearers will be Harmon Robinson, Dwight Robinson, Steve Walden, Bill Young, Kevin Traywick, & Cliff “Chick”  Midgley.




Dessie "Lois" Berry



Dessie “Lois” Berry, 75, of Tulsa, OK (formerly of Poteau) passed away Friday, July 12, 2013 in Tulsa.  Lois was born April 14, 1938 in Bokchito, OK to Arthur R. & Emma L. (Chester) Carrell.  She was retired having worked as night manager for the Women’s Crisis Center.  Lois was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Francis Dale Berry; sister, Cora Carrell; aunt, Zora Jones; uncle, Jess Jones.

Survivors include her sons, Dale Berry of Claremore, OK, Don Berry &  Doug Berry of Tulsa, OK; daughter, Tina Berry of Claremore, OK; grandsons, Richard Addison Berry & Tim Berry; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

Services will be 2 pm, Tuesday, July 16, 2013 graveside at Bokchito Cemetery, Bokchito, OK with Rev. Jim Cook officiating. Interment will follow.

     Robert Joe Brooks II, 27, of Poteau, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday July 9, 2013, in Sewickly, PA. Robert was born November 20, 1985 in Oklahoma City, OK to Robert Joe Brooks & Pamela Sue (Dalton) Brooks. Sergeant Robert Brooks II was an Army Ranger with the 3rd Platoon Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, & 75th Ranger Regiment. Robert had been deployed 5 times to Iraq & Afghanistan for his country. Robert was a very decorated soldier receiving the Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 campaign stars, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (4th Award), Army Good Conduct Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 2 Campaign Stars.

     Survivors include his mother, Pam Brooks of Poteau, OK; sister & brother-in-law, Cecilia & Brad Maggard of Wister, OK; Niece, Willow Maggard; Numerous other aunts, uncles, loved ones and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Brooks.



     A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday July 15, 2013 at Red Oak cemetery in Red Oak, OK with Rev. Les Scroggins officiating. Pallbearers will be Brad Maggard, Jeremy Kinsey, Caleb Whihen, & Mike Dalton.

Lucian” Country Boy” Gassaway, 85, of Monroe, OK passed away Wednesday July 10, 2013, in Tulsa, OK. Lucian was born on January 21, 1928 in Sugar Loaf Community( Monroe), OK to Kenny & Mary (Gray) Gassaway. Lucian was the owner of Country Boy Furniture for 44 years, on the Board of Directors at Community State Bank for 9 years, enjoyed being a rancher, working in the rental business, residential & commercial, & even tried to sell a few monuments one time!

He is preceded in death by his parents Kenny & Mary Gassaway; Brothers, Hollis & Marvin Gassaway; Sisters, Dessie Billings, Sybil Robison, & Eleanor Welsh.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sue Gassaway; 3 children, Lucian Gassaway Jr. of Poteau, OK, Regina Gassaway of Weatherford, TX, Natalie & husband Mike Scrimsher of Broken Arrow, OK; 5 Grandchildren, Hope, P.J, Jennifer, Hannah, & Haven; 4 Great Grandchildren; Special Care Giver, Danny Gray, Numerous other loved ones and friends.

Services will be held at 10 Am Saturday July 13, 2013 at Springhill Baptist Church in Monroe, OK, with Rev Bill Parker & Rev. Jim Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Monroe Cemetery, in Monroe, Oklahoma.

Pallbearers will be G.W. “Dub” Evans Jr., Bryan Davis, Richard Swartz, Ronnie Benefield, Blake Dill, & Larry Stacy; Honorary Pallbearers will be, Don Shrum, Earl Kendall, & Art Drury.

The family will be at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-8 to visit with relatives & friends.
