Hazel Evans

Hazel Ann (Turner) Evans, 91, of Howe, OK passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at her home.  Hazel was born January 29, 1930 to William Edgar and Emma Grace (Brown) Turner; the oldest of four children.  Hazel, by her own admission, was a shy, quiet, farm-raised girl who loved attending school at Monroe, OK.  Against the wishes of all parents involved, sixteen year old Hazel married 21 year old Wilford Evans on December 20, 1946.  Shortly after they were married, Hazel & Wilford moved west of Wister to allow Wilford to work on a ranch.  Soon thereafter they rode in the back of a flatbed truck to “try their luck” in the sawmill camps near Jackson, CA.  But soon they longed to be back within sight of Sugarloaf Mountain and moved back to the area.

Edra Blevlyn was born in 1951 and Guy Wilford Jr. “Dub” was born in 1953.  During this time the family moved to Oklahoma City and back to Monroe, finally settling near the property where Hazel lived the rest of her life.

While Wilford was away during the day, working construction jobs, Hazel kept the farm life going.  She milked the cow, fed the hogs, made a garden, took care of two kids, cooked on a wood stove, and washed on a wringer washer.  Hazel started bookkeeping for Lucian Gassaway at Country Boy Furniture in Poteau in 1965.  She worked there until 1990 when she quit in order to care for her ailing mother.

Hazel accepted Christ Jesus as her savior at the age of 55, after many years of doing service for Christ’s kingdom without feeling she had truly made the ultimate decision.

Hazel & Wilford’s lives were a testament of perseverance and love for their two children, 5 grandchildren, 9 great  grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Services will be 2 pm, Friday, May 21, 2021 at Springhill Baptist Church with Larry Stacy officiating.  Burial will follow at Monroe Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Daryl Davis, Tre’ Evans, Paden Evans, Russ Benefield, Troy Wilson, Tony Schneider and Seth McKenzie.
