Mae A. Slavens


Mae Davis Slavens, 78, of Poteau, OK passed away Sunday, December 27, 2015 in Ft. Smith, AR.  Mae was born May 20, 1937 in Cameron, OK to Willie L. & Grace E. (Gipson) Davis.  She married Albert O. Slavens on February 26, 1956.  She had a Masters of Early Childhood from Northeastern State University.    Mae was a teacher at Poteau Public Schools from 1977-2000.  She was a member of  the Poteau Eastern Star Chapter and Oklahoma Education Association.  She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, bowling.  In earlier years she enjoyed playing softball.   Mae was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Butch, Lee, Doyle & Ray; sister, Colene Wagner; and daughter in law, LaDonna Slavens.

Survivors include her son, Walter E. Slavens of Poteau, OK;  siblings, Demeris Kilgore of Irving, TX, Art & Marty Davis of Holton, KS; grandchildren, Albert Slavens & wife April of Midwest City, OK, Sarah Slavens of Nacoma Park, OK and Jason Stephens of Kansas City, MO;  great grandson, James William Slavens of Midwest City; other relatives, loved ones &  friends.

Services will be 2 pm, Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau, OK with Rev. Jim Cook officiating.  Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Kelly Cooper, Eric Kirkland, Frankie Brown, J.D. DeLap, Ted Kilgore and Colby Lowers.

The family will be at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm to visit with relatives & friends.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Agnes Marie Harris



Agnes Marie Harris joined the love of her life in heaven on December 19, 2015.   Clifford Oliver Harris preceded her in death on December 24, 2012Agnes was 91 years of age.  She loved to garden, fish and was a 50+year member of the Eastern Star.  Agnes leaves behind many people that love her including her daughter, son-in-law, 2 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Her beautiful blue eyes and warm smile will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

Services will be 10 am, Monday, December 28, 2015 at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau, OK. Interment will be in Monroe Cemetery, Monroe, OK

Chuck Cunningham Jr.



Charles S. Cunningham Jr., 68, of Poteau, OK passed away Sunday, December 20, 2015 in Poteau.  Chuck was born in Poteau to Charles Stewart Sr. & Cecilrae  (Frazier) Cunningham Sr.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. & Mrs. Cunningham.  He loved music, history, science and learning.  He was a drummer in the early 60's and until late in his life.  He pet project was restoring the old Library building.



Survivors include his son, Alex Cunningham of Poteau, OK; sister, Carol Cunningham; nephew & niece, Stephen Steighner and Susan White; cousins, Ann Cunningham Wickstrom, Tammy Asbaugh, Terry Holmes, Cheryl McAnally; other relatives, loved ones and friends.



The family will be at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6-8 pm to visit with relatives & friends.   Please make donations to the charity of your choice.

Dorene Cheryl Thompson



Dorene Cheryl Thompson, 87, of Poteau, OK passed away Friday, December 18, 2015 in Poteau.  Dorene was born January 7, 1928 in Wister, OK to Elmer & Willie (Bullard) Wilson.  She & Elton were husband & wife for  64 years having married on her birthday in 1948.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elton Thompson in 2012; son, Larry Thompson.

Survivors include her son & wife, Glenn & Sandra Thompson of Poteau, OK; grandchildren, Cheryl & husband Steve Arnall of Tahlequah, OK, Jamie Spunaugle of Collinsville, OK, Randie Thompson & husband Jon Atkins of Denver, CO, Brian Thompson of Poteau, Kelli Thompson of Poteau, former daughter in law, Frances Thompson of Poteau; numerous great grandchildren; sister, Phyllis Wilson of Alamo, California.

Services will be 2 pm, Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Oakland Cemetery Pavilion, Poteau, OK with Rev. Jim Cook officiating.

Alma Emerson


Alma (Sis) Clippard Emerson died in her home early December 15th.  Born January 22, 1924 in Detroit MI, Alma, older brother John and parents Lois and Lloyd moved to Flint in 1927.  Brother Tom was later born. 
Alma loved music and was lead soprano in ‘Gypsy Rover’ her senior year at Dye school.  Scholarships and several jobs supported Alma while she was in the accelerated program at Michigan State Normal College.  Younger sister Katy was born.  After earning a BS in English with minors in Fine Arts and History, Alma began teaching and sang in the Midland Women’s Choir and Flint Community Chorus.  Six years later, she accepted a teaching position in Linz, Austria at a US dependent school that had been Gestapo headquarters.  Alma met, fell in love and married Allmon Emerson, an Army Captain from the 510th Field Artillery Battalion.
They left Europe to live in Ft. Sill, Anchorage, Memphis and Wilmington, NC.  After Em retired, he, Alma, children Becky, Libby and Tommy, the cat Ruthie and dog Mike moved to Oklahoma. Alma taught fifth grade at Panama four years and fifteen years at Wister.  She retired in 1986, but never lost interest in education and her passion for opera.
Alma is survived by her three children, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many cool relatives.    
Graveside services, 1pm Saturday, December 19th at Wister City Cemetery.
    Donations may be made in Alma's name to Habitat for Humanity or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
