John P. Floyd

John Phillip Floyd, 73, rested in the arms of Jesus, his Savior, on December 31, 2021. Born August 28, 1948 to Linda Frances (Jones) and Sherman Phillip Floyd, John lived in Poteau 69 years before moving to Oklahoma City with his mother and brother in February, 2019. Once John was diagnosed with terminal cancer, it was his final wish to return to his beloved hometown. He treasured his final weeks at the Oaks Healthcare Center with the caring staff and many visits from friends and acquaintances.

John graduated from Poteau High School in 1968. After attending Carl Albert State College, he worked as a bailiff for Judge Pat Pate. Once the judge retired, John began his career at Central National Bank in February 1984. He served 34 years at CNB until he retired on December 28, 2018.

Family was always important to John. He revered his father and was devoted to his mother. As the middle child, he looked up to his older sister, Toni and watched out for his younger brother, Bob. He was extremely close to his extended family–aunts, uncles, and his cousins, who were like siblings to him growing up.

John was a consummate rule follower—probably because his mother was a lifelong educator and first grade-teacher. When John was around you might as well forget about opening Christmas gifts earlier than the appointed on December 25th.
As the son of a coach, John lived and breathed sports. He lettered in high school football and was a fixture at Poteau Pirate games and practices long after he and his nephews graduated. He cheered for both OU and OSU, although not concurrently. An avid baseball fan, he studied and quoted stats from teams that caught his attention: Cardinals, Royals and Yankees. John’s college and professional team allegiances may have changed throughout his life, but his faithfulness to Poteau and his beloved Pirates always remained steadfast.

When John wasn’t working, he could be found at a coffee shop talking sports or walking around town making stops to visit with friends. John loved Jesus and made church a priority. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Poteau. Once he moved to OKC, he and his mother attended Quail Springs Baptist Church. John suggested they get involved and join, but once he knew his days were coming to an end, he requested his membership moved back to FBCP.
John is survived by his mother, Linda of Oklahoma City; brother, Bob of Norman; two nephews, Scott (Heather) and Michael (Stephanie); brother-in-law, Mick (Peggy); grand-niece, Micah; two grand-nephews, Brennan and Garrett, all of Edmond; an uncle, Curt Floyd (Donna) of Dallas; an aunt, Judy Jones Milholland of Yukon; and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sherman Floyd, and sister, Toni Thompson.

Memorial Services will be 2:00pm  Saturday, May 7, 2022 at First Baptist Church in Poteau, Oklahoma with Reverend Phil McGehee officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall at the church.  
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Poteau First Baptist Church.
