Jerry Scott

Jerry Daniel Haynes-Scott, 81, of Poteau, OK passed away Thursday, June 10, 2021 at Ft. Smith, AR.  Jerry was born February 7, 1940 in Austin, TX.  He was retired as Vice President of Compressor Mfg.  Among his many endeavors was fishing, Gideon Int’l Ministry, Sunday School Teacher, Senior Adult Ministry, Food Ministry, Hospital Volunteer, yard work-gardening-flowers.

A Celebration of Life will be held 10 am, Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Double Branch Baptist Church in Poteau, OK.  Family & friends will visit before and after the service.

In a Celebration of Life service how do you sum up the value & honor that an individual deserves.  Jerry was a quiet, gentle man of few words.  He often spoke of his love for bass fishing on Lake Fork in Texas.  He had all the desired equipment: bass boat, rods  & reels, lures, tackle boxes filled to the brim.  He was a bass fisherman through & through.

But the Jerry I knew was a fisherman of a different kind.  In August 1998, God called Jerry to be a fisherman for the souls of mankind.  Retiring after 43 years with the same company in 2002 he moved to Poteau.  He brought all his bass fishing equipment with him, but the bass boat was never in the water in Oklahoma.  It sat in our yard for the 20 years he lived here.

The last 20 years of his life he served his Lord in any way God asked him; be it family-friends or organization of this community.

He was a man of many facets; so whether you knew him by any or all of these names he loved you very much.  Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Relmond Haynes & wife Alma; mother, Helen Haynes-Scott & her husband (his adoptive father) Elmer; children, Gregory Scott & Jennifer Scott; and brother, Jim Haynes.

“Dad, Grandpa, Grandpa Jerry, Pops, Brother, Uncle Jerry, friend, teacher, co-laborer, or even Santa – which he did for family, friends and ministry.  He was the candy buyer for machines & gift shop at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center; therefore he was lovingly known as “The Candyman”.

My favorite verse in scripture for him is Matthew 5:16 “Even so let your light shine before men: that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

“Thank each of you for coming today to celebrate the life of this man of God”
