Patsy J. Gilstrap



Patsy Jean Gilstrap, 83, of Poteau, OK went to be with the Lord Friday, June 27, 2014 in Poteau.  Patsy was born in Dow-Hartshorne, OK on March 22, 1931 to William Franklin & Isabell I. (Blair) Clay.   She was a secretary at the courthouse for years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Poteau. Patsy was an avid reader.  She was the “Best Mom in the World”.   Patsy was preceded in death by her husband, Bob E. Gilstrap on 2/11/2002 & sister Nancy Pierce.

Survivors include her daughters, Luana Gilstrap, Jeana & David Stone of Poteau; granddaughters, Meredith & Craig Price of Wilburton, OK, Sara Beth Stone of Poteau, OK; great granddaughter, Scarlett Price; other relatives, loved ones & friends.

Memorial services will be 11 am, Monday, June 30, 2014 at the First Free Will Baptist Church, Poteau, OK with Rev. Phil McGehee & Rev. Jim Cook officiating.

Louise Caroline Lonto, 96, of  Poteau, OK passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014 in Poteau.  Louise was born February 23, 1918 in Elmore, MN to Carl & Nancy Marie (Snelson) Eidsvold.  She was a pie maker in a delicatessen in her younger days.    The family will have private services.

Velma L. Timbs



Velma L. Timbs, 76, of Wister, OK passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014 in Ft. Smith, AR.  Velma was born November 2, 1937 in Howe, OK to Estle & Carrie (Harris) Stacy.  She worked in a bakery.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Guy; daughter, Patricia White; and siblings.

Donald K. Gavin Sr., 54, of Benton, AR passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014 in Benton, AR.  Donald was born August 13, 1959 in Ft. Smith, AR to Donald O. & Maxine E. Gavin.  He was a carpenter.  Donald was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Jaxson Ryan. 

Survivors include his daughters, Cheyenne Gavin of Bryant, AR, Alisa K. Gavin; son & daughter in law, Don & Jackie Gavin of Poteau, OK; 3 granddaughters, Holly & Adelynn Gavin, Macy Fox; grandson, Aiden Fox; brother, Jack Gavin of Leola, AR; other relatives, loved ones & friends.

Services  will be 2 pm, Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Greenhill Cemetery Pavilion in Cameron, OK.  Burial will follow.

Irene Tedder



Irene Frances Tedder, 92, of Panama, OK passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014 in Cameron, OK.  Irene was born December 9, 1921 near Acorn in Polk County, AR to Early B. & Leona (Foil) Churchill.   She was a homemaker.  Irene was a member of the Pentecostal Church in Panama, OK.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow on June 19, 1998; her parents, Early B. & Willie (Cline) Churchill; one brother & 3 sisters.

Survivors include her 3 daughters & son in law, Shirley Reynolds, Patricia & Harold Magee, Joyce Thomas all of Panama, OK; 1 son & daughter in law, Early Joe & Sylvia Tedder of Spiro, OK; 20 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; 28 great great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Gladys Fessler of Ottawa, IL, Lois & James Smedley of Poteau, OK; numerous nieces, nephews; other relatives & loved ones.

Services will be 2 pm, Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at the Solid Rock Pentecostal Church, Panama, OK with Rev. Don Martin, Rev. Jim Cook, & Rev. Tim Painter officiating.  Interment will following Fairview Cemetery, Panama.  Pallbearers will be Mark Bier, Dewayne Sweazy, Mike Sweazy, Michael Highfill, Ray Buchanan, & Randy Lum.

Ava Janel Key, 81, of Poteau, OK passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014 in Poteau. Ava was born July 2, 1932 in Poteau to Luther & Gladys (Harrison) Lindsay.  She was retired from Swiss Cleaners.  She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents.



She is survived by her sister & brother in law, Bobby & Clifford Weaver; sister in law, Louise Hornback of Poteau; aunts, Virginia Harrison of Panama, OK, Wilcie Harrison of Pocola, OK;  nephews, Jeremy James, Billy Wilson, Randal Weaver, Brandon Weaver, and Randy Weaver; nieces, Ronda Sears, Tanna Weaver, Ashley Weaver, Hanna Weaver, Cheryl Hornback all of Poteau, OK; cousins, Wynona Winters, Sue Dobbins of Poteau, OK; many friends and loved ones.

Jackie Ray Baggs, 77, of Cameron, OK passed away Friday, June 13, 2014 in Ft. Smith, AR.  Jackie was born December 17, 1936 in Texas to Riley & Beulah Baggs.  He was retired from the US Navy.  Jack was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Survivors include his wife Carol “Renee”  of the home; sons, Mark & wife, Cheryl Gray of Ft. Monty C. Burton, 63, of Heavener, OK  passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014 in Talihina, OK.  Monty was born December 19, 1950 in Poteau, OK to Earl & Nadean (Justice) Burton.  He was a teacher.  Monty was a veteran of the US Navy.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Teresa Burton & brother, Phil Burton.

Survivors include his daughter Sarah Burton French & husband Randal of Heavener, OK; sons, Ross Green of Talihina, OK, Ryan Green of McAlester, OK; grandchildren, Ross Green II, Shelby Green, Emmalie Green, Jacee Green, Randal French II, Cash French; sister Connie Heins & husband, Robert of Spring, TX.

Kathryn Wann



Kathryn Melba Joyce Wilson Wann, 78, of Monroe, OK passed away June 12, 2014 in Monroe.  Kathryn was born June 1, 1936 in Monroe, OK to George Wesley & Jessie Allen (Webster) Wilson.  She was married to Clifton Wann on June 4, 1954.  They celebrated their 60th anniversary together at their home in Monroe, OK.  Kathryn was a cook at Howe Schools.  She was preceded in death by her parents; father in law & mother in law, Aubrey Franklin & Amy Mae (Ladd) Wann; sister, Imogene Wilson; brothers, Issac Wilson & wife Ellen, Will Wilson & wife Wilhelmenia, Bob  Wilson & Gerald Wilson; daughter, Katy Jean Wann Corn & husband Ray; grandson, Danny Barto; great grandson, Evan Dale Vincent; great granddaughter, Bretlynn Rain Ford.

 Evelyn Steele, 96, of Spiro, OK passed away Monday, June 9, 2014 in Pocola, OK.  Evelyn was born in 1917 in Hattiesburg, MS to Luster & Asleen (Winscot) Boatner.  She was a homemaker.  Evelyn was a member of Mt. Triumph Missionary Baptist Church in Ft. Coffee, OK.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Steele Sr; daughters, Aslee Steele & Joyce Williams; son, Louis Manning; 3 sisters & 6 brothers.



Survivors include her daughters Earnest LaFaye Abdullah (Shaikh) of Ft. Coffee, OK, Mareen Johnson Evans of Long Beach, CA, Lesley Dugan (Robert)  of Spiro, OK; sons, Chester Steele (Robbie) & Ernest Steele Jr. of Ft. Coffee, OK, sister in law, Esther Griffin; 72 grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, loved ones & friends.

James "Irby" Wright



James ‘Irby’ Wright, 89, of Denton, TX passed away Friday, June 6, 2014 in Denton.  Irby was born January 28, 1925 in Spiro, OK to Jim & Betty (Turney) Wright.  He operated a fishing tackle retail store.  He was a veteran of the US Navy.  Irby was a member of the Open Range Cowboy Church in Krum, TX.  He was preceded in death by his parents Jim & Betty Wright; and wife, Bobbye Wright on June 17, 2007; 3 brothers & 4 sisters.

Survivors include his daughters & their husbands,  Sharon “Sissy” & Melvin McAdams of Huntington, TX, Cresha & Michael Beattie of Denton, TX, Jan & David Pinto of Lake Dallas, TX, Denise & Dan Dalton of Celeste, TX; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; sisters in law, Betty Albritton, Dollie Underwood, Ila Underwood; brother in law, Jimmie Underwood; nieces, nephews, other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends.

Services will be 2 pm, Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Evans Memorial Chapel in Pocola, OK with Rev. Barry Joe Duncan



Barry Joe Duncan, 67, of Wister, OK passed away Thursday June 5, 2014 in Wister. Joe was born May 23, 1947 in Poteau, OK to Bedford Joe & Lura Laverne (King) Duncan.  He was a man of many talents, trapping being among them. Joe attended Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.  He was a veteran of the US Navy.



Survivors include his beloved wife, Miyako “Mimi” (Shiragaki) Duncan; son, Billy Joe “B.Joe” Duncan; mother, Lura Duncan of Wister;  3 granddaughters, Hannah Steelman of Summerfield, OK, Brooklyn & Ashlyn Duncan of Wister; grandsons, Reece Lamb of Wister, Matt Steelman of Summerfield, OK; brother & sister in law, Keith & Colleen Duncan of Oklahoma City, OK; sister & brother in law Carole Louis Gill of Poteau, OK; uncle, Harold Duncan of Poteau; numerous cousins, other relatives, loved ones & friends.

Tilda Jackson



Tilda Kathryn Jackson, Devoted Christian, Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, & Dearest sweet forever Best Friend.  Tilda was born in Pocola, OK on September 22, 1919, daughter of the late Gertie & Oscar (Shine) Pipkins.  Mrs. Jackson was a lifelong resident of Pocola, OK and a member of  Pocola First Baptist Church – she became a resident of Hope’s Creek Retirement & Assisted Living in Van Buren, AR in November of 2013.  Tilda is preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Billy Pipkins & Lewis Pipkins, both of Pocola; her loving husband of 32 years, Richard Boyd Jackson of Colorado Springs, CO. 


Tilda had not only been a wonderful, loving and caring mother, she was also a devoted wife and profound Christian with an unshakable faith in God and loved reading her Bible.  She was a member of the Pocola First Baptist Church in Pocola, OK where she loved being an active member for many years, especially in her Sunday School class where she enjoyed getting to fellowship with the ladies in her class and loved them all.  Tilda was a Volunteer for Hospice following the death of her husband and received honors for her selfless giving back of her time and dedication on behalf of other Hospice patients and staff members.

Tilda worked outside the home for many years as a waitress to help provide and help raise her children.  Along with being  a wonderful homemaker as all her family and friends claimed she was through  knowing her, they state, she was an extremely meticulous lady throughout her life, yet, welcomed any who visited her and made sure no one ever left hungry because she would  insist on cooking and serving her delicious prepared meals and usually included homemade baked pies or cakes she always made fresh, - but Tilda’s true talents allowed her to shine as she was also well known for her outstanding interior decorating and floral arrangement abilities, her family and friends state that her decorating was what she enjoyed and found great pleasure in doing for many, many years. 
Her family and friends have many very fond memories of Tilda, and she will surely be sadly missed. 

Survivors include her 5 children, sons, Jerry Edward Gregory & wife Lavern of Mulberry, AR, Joe Douglas Gregory & wife Sadie of Heavener, OK; daughters, Carol Kathryn Ray & husband Dale Ray of Chrisman, IL, Sherry Ann Timm & husband Mark Timm of Carson City, NV, Karen Sue Dover & husband Henry Dover of Cherokee, NC; 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren.

Services will be 10 am Saturday,  June 7, 2014 at Pocola First Baptist Church, Pocola, OK with Rev. Grant Ray officiating, Eulogy given by Janice Davis & Nancy Hendrix.   Entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ft. Smith, AR.  Pallbearers will be Eric Hendrix, Zack Hendrix, Wayne Beachy, Stan Gray.  Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron Pipkins, Gerald Pipkins, Steve Hendrix, Mac Pipkins, George A. Coye B. McCage Sr.



Coye B. McCage Sr. was born Aug. 21, 1930 to Bertha and Ollie McCage in Spiro, OK.  He died June 3, 2014 at 83 yrs, 10 mos. Of age.  He was a veteran of the Korean War and retired from OK Feeds in Ft. Smith in 1992 after 23 years.  Coye was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Wilma Battles of Calhoun, OK, Deloris Ritter of Bokoshe, OK, Hazel Skelton of Stoney Point, OK; 1 great grandchild, Kaylee Dawn Taylor of Dardenelle, AR.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lucille of Panama, OK; sons, Coye Jr. & wife Leanie of Cameron, OK, Harlan McCage, Russell McCage & wife Brenda all of Panama, OK, Tim McCage & wife Virginia of Spiro, OK, James David McCage & wife, Danielle of Coweta, OK; daughters, Dian Ketter & husband Charles, Brenda Metcalf & husband Mike all of Charleston, AR, Sandy Taylor & husband Richard of Dardenelle, AR, Martie Southerland & husband Jerry of Pocola, OK.  He has 29 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.  He is survived by 4 sisters, Helen Parker of Ft. Frank "Stubs" Berry



Franklin Moore “Stubs” Berry, 85, of Poteau, OK passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014 in Oklahoma Veterans Center in Talihina, OK.  Frank was born December 19, 1928 in Michigan, the son of the late Mark O. & Alta (Moore) Berry.  Frank served in the US Air Force and was stationed in Roswell, NM.  He was a retired carpenter, a member of Eagles in Spiro, OK.  He loved racing and riding motorcycles.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim Berry; sisters, Frances Root, Mabel Vanorman, Evelyn Parker & Helen Manning all of Michigan; grandson, Ian Berry of Maryland; son in law, Jackie Dyer.

He is survived by son, Edward K. Berry & wife Patricia of Maryland; daughters, Deborah G. Shetter & husband Randy, Pamela K. Dyer, Teresa E. Bratcher & husband Randy all of Oklahoma; 3 sisters, Fern (Burkett) Starr, Carol Ann Newberry, & Kathy Anderson all of Michigan; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, loved ones & friends.

Robert D. "Butch" Woods II



Cpl. Robert D. “Butch” Woods II, 39, of Collierville, TN (formerly of Poteau, OK) passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014 in Goodlettsville, TN.  Butch was born September 23, 1974 in Stillwater, OK to Robert D. & Paula Sue (Hayes) Woods. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corp.  He graduated from the University of Memphis, Magna Cum Laude in Business & Marketing.   Butch worked as a private investigator.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry A. Woods Sr., Rosa Pyland, Clarence (Rookey) Hayes, Troy Pyland; & cousin Jay Shankle.



Survivors include his parents, Robert & Paula Woods;  brother, Kevin Woods (USMC); sister, Kimberley Smahay; sons, Hunter Woods & Cole Woods all of Collierville, TN; daughter, Chelsea Woods & her son, Brandon Wright of Dresden, TN; grandmother, Viada Woods of Poteau, OK; nephew, William Woods; niece Savannah (Savvy ) & Jerry Smahay; many aunts, uncles, cousins & friends.

Beverly Mae Rhodes, 62, of Sallisaw, OK passed away Friday, May 30, 2014 in Ft. Smith, AR.  Beverly was born February 7, 1952 in Brawley, CA to Leeroy Glenn & Amelia Mae (Stienhofer) Parrish.  She was a tax preparer for H&R Block.  She was preceded in death by her father; son, Shawn Bates; grandparents, Gwen & Ralph Parrish, Rachel & Otto Stienhofer.

Edward "Wayne" Hamby


Wayne Hamby, 90, of Poteau, OK  passed away May 29, 2014 in Poteau.  Wayne was born July 11, 1923 in Spiro, OK to Merty & Mertle (Sparks) Hamby.  He was a heavy equipment operator.  Wayne was a veteran of the US Army. 


Survivors include his daughters, Sharon Lappert & Sandra Hamby of Santa Anna, CA, Anita Maez of Long Beach, CA; son, Dennis Wayne Hamby of Reno, NV; grandchildren, Katrina Hamby and Aaron Maez; stepsons Ron Pompili of Poteau, OK and Larry Williguis of Akron, OH; niece Iva Lou & Dave of Perry, OK.
