Phyllis R. Smedley

Phyllis R. Smedley, 97, of Poteau, OK passed away Friday, August 28, 2009 in Poteau. Phyllis was born August 28, 1912 in Bengal, OK. She was a homemaker. Her husband of 67 years, Ben B. Smedley preceded her in death. She and Ben were constant companions; they did everything together. She was also preceded in death by a son, Don. Phyllis was the oldest living member of the First Baptist Church in Poteau. Survivors include her son, Jim & his wife, LaVern Smedley of Smithville, OK; daughter in law, Charlsey Smedley of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Donald Paul Smedley of California, Kenneth & wife, Dawn Smedley of Pocola, OK, Joe & wife, Rebecca Smedley of Smithville, OK, Charla & husband, Sean Lawson of Orlando, FL, Kathy & husband, Gary Roland of Corpus Christi, TX; 8 great great grandchildren; other relatives & loved ones; & many beloved friends. Services were held 11 am, August 31, 2009 at the Oakland Cemetery Pavilion in Poteau, OK with Rev. Phil McGehee officiating. Jeanne Reed

Jeanne Reed, 93, of Poteau, OK passed from this life in her home on August 24, 2009. One of seven children, she was born December 30, 1915 in Keefton, OK to John I & Margaret (Cravens) Kennedy. She worked hand in hand with her previously deceased husband, Roy W. Reed and, though they started with nothing, together they went on to build a highly successful independent oil and gas company and established the Dog Creek Ranch, one of the largest cattle and real estate holdings in southeast Oklahoma and were original stockholders in the Poteau State Bank. In 1967, they built their home at the base of Cavanal Hill. Jeanne was a former youth Sunday School Teacher in Oklahoma City and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Poteau. She traveled abroad on numerous Missionary trips to help others and supported Project Compassion. She was selected as the Business and Professional Women's "Woman of the Year", received the Poteau Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Contribution Award, the Oklahoma City University Bishop Paul Millhouse Award, served as a Trustee of the Carl Albert State College Development Foundation, and was a member of the Carl Albert State College Hall of Fame. She also thoroughly enjoyed serving as Grand Marshall for the Poteau Frontier Days Rodeo Parade. She was a person that always put the needs of others before her own, never asking anything in return and one who always had a Christian attitude in all things and for all people. Jeanne raised four children, Son, M.K. (Don) Hutton and wife, Jo of Rogers, Arkansas, two pre-deceased daughters, Rosemary Reed and Lora Jean Reed Bowman, son, Bob Reed and wife, Deanna of Poteau, and daughter Christie Reed Williams and husband Ted of Hot Springs, AR. She was blessed with a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, a sister, Polly hales; other family and friends. Special appreciation is given to Dave Abrams, Issy Aytes, and Traci Moya for the kindness and love they gave her. Milhouse Award, Carl Albert Development Foundation Board of Directors - Secretary, CASC Hall of Fame, CASC Scholarship for Nursing and Business, CASC Endowed Scholarship, Board of Directors for Youth Services Funeral services for Jeanne were held 2 pm, Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Carl Albert State College Auditorium in Poteau, OK with the Reverend Greg Tener & the Reverend Jimmy D. Cook officiating. Interment followed the services in Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dave Abrams, Ralph Sartor, Jerry Thompson, Jerry Dunning, Gearl Fout and Jake Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Dehart & J. Scott Clark. Arrangements were under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.

Judith Ann Goodwin

Judith Ann “Judy” Goodwin, 67, of Grapevine, Texas, formerly of Panama, OK passed away on Monday, August 24, 2009 in Grapevine. Judy was born on November 5, 1941 in San Diego, CA to Robert Lewis & Jeanett Elizabeth (Sands) Garland. Judy was a Wal-Mart sales associate until her retirement. Judy loved her grandchildren, shopping, flowers and making floral arrangements, and life. Her husband, Bill Goodwin; a son, Gary Goodwin; & her parents preceded her in death. Judy is survived by her son, Thomas Goodwin of Tulsa, OK; a daughter & son in law, Stacy & Shayne Hilburn of Grapevine, TX; a grandson, Joshua Goodwin of Kingston, OK’ 2 granddaughters, Shayna Hilburn & Hailye HIlburn, both of Grapevine, TX; 2 brothers, Robert Garland Jr. of Oregon & Charles Garland of San Diego, CA; 2 sisters, Joann Krabbe of Anaheim, CA & Barbara Darrow of El Cajon, CA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives & loved ones; and many beloved friends. Funeral services for Judy were held at 10:00 am Thursday, August 27, 2009 at First Assembly of God Church at Panama, OK with the Reverend Brian Smith & the Reverend Jimmy D. Cook officiating. Mark Joseph Meadows

Mark Joseph Meadows, 40, of Monroe, OK passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2009. Mark was born on March 29, 1969 in Richwood, WV to John & Caroline (Clayton) Meadows. He was a member and Deacon at First Baptist Church of Monroe, a member of the Heavener Masonic Lodge; and had been a coal miner for the last 7 ½ years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and spending time with his family & friends. Most of all Mark loved being a Dad. He was a loving, husband, father, son, brother & friend. Mark’s grandparents, Otha & Zella Clayton, Harley Tyler, & Ester Green; a brother in law, Mike Carpenter; and an uncle, Jack Ervin preceded him in death. Donna “Madge” Robison, 79, of Poteau, OK passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2009 in Poteau, OK. Madge was born on December 24, 1929 in Poteau, OK to O.W. “Boots” & Lois (White) Wise. Madge was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Poteau, OK. Her husband, James Robison & her parents, Boots & Lois Wise precede her in death. Madge is survived by daughter & son in law, Jan & Paul Mattox of Sallisaw, OK; a granddaughter, Bonnie Stites of Sallisaw, OK; a grandson, Jeff Mattox of Fort Smith, AR; 6 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mozelle Plummer, Wilma Eidschun, & Anna LaFevers; all of Poteau, OK; 3 brothers & sisters in law, Joe & Annette Wise, Don & Connie Wise, & Kenny & Mary Wise, all of Poteau, OK; numerous other relatives & loved ones; many beloved friends. KENNETH G. SPEARMAN JR.

Kenneth G. Spearman, Jr., 45, of Greenwood, AR passed away on August 13, 2009 in Baton Rouge, LA, the result of an accident which occurred at 5:45 am as he was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle to work. Kenneth graduated from Buckhannon Upshur, WV High School in 1983, and upon graduation, joined the US Navy where he served on the USS California. After his term of enlistment, he returned to West Virginia for a few years before moving to Greenwood, AR where he was employed by Best Floors Carpet Company of Fort Smith, AR as a tile & carpet layer. For the last two years, he was employed by Granite Manpower of Houston, TX as a mill wright. Kenneth is survived by his father & stepmother, Kenneth & Kitty Spearman of Greenwood, AR; his mother, Wilma Queen of Buckhannon, WV; his sister, Dorothy Spearman of Austin, TX; very special friend, Mary Ann Gallant of Poteau, OK; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives & loved ones; and many beloved friends. Memorial services for Kenneth were held at 6:00 pm Friday, August 21, 2009 at Excelsior Baptist Church, 3421 Smokey Road in Greenwood, AR with Pastor David Moon officiating.

Elizabeth Ann Boyette, 59, of Shady Point, OK passed away on Monday, August 17, 2009 in Shady Point. Elizabeth was born on September 19, 1949 in Farmersville, TX to Wayland & Lois (Langston) Mounger. She was a homemaker. Her father, 2 nephews & a niece precede her in death. William Walker Wann, 93, of Wister, OK passed away on Monday, August 17, 2009 in Poteau. Walker was born on March 6, 1916 in Booneville, AR to Omer W. & Ester (Harwell) Wann. Gavin Dewayne Fifield, 11 weeks, of Carmi, IL passed away Thursday, August 13, 2009 in St. Louis, MO. Gavin was born in St. Louis on May 28, 2009 to Jeremy James Fifield and Amber June Evans. Gavin was preceded in death by his maternal grandpa, Vernon Dewayne "Rawhide" Evans. Ellis Whigham

Ellis Glen Whigham, 66 of Poteau, OK passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2009 in Poteau. Ellis was born in Gilbertown, Alabama on September 17, 1942, to Haskell C. & Edith (King) Whigham. He was the Airport Manager for the past 6+ years. He was a member of the Poteau First United Methodist Church; a 32nd degree Mason (Sebastian Lodge # 706 Ft. Smith, AR); member of the Western Arkansas Scottish Rite, Scimitar Temple. Ellis was a certified aircraft mechanic, graduating from Tulsa County Vo-Tech; a private pilot; avid motorcycle rider; awesome husband, father, grandfather, brother & friend. He was loved and admired by many, especially his 5 wonderful grandsons who worshipped him. Larry Leon "Doc" Watson

Larry Leon "Doc" Watson, 56, of Shady Point, OK passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2009 in Russellville, AR. Larry was born on March 1, 1953 in Poteau, OK to Leon & Eva Nell (Wiles) Watson. Larry was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He was a devoted agriculture teacher at Poteau High School for 28 years. He was a member of the LeFlore County Fair Board, the LeFlore County Cattlemen’s Association, and many other associations. Larry’s passion in life was his son, grandson, & his family and his hobbies were ranching and listening to bluegrass music. Larry’s parents preceded him in death. Larry is survived by his son & daughter in law, Jonathan & Julie Watson & his grandson Parker, all of Havana, AR; uncles and aunts, Frank & Bert Wiles & Robert & Elinor Pierce all of Shady Point, OK, & Vera Watson of Poteau, OK; numerous cousins, other relatives & loved ones and many beloved friends and former students. Charley James Sexton, 86, of Poteau OK passed away Friday, August 7, 2009. Charley was born in Ozark, AR on April 16, 1923 to Lonnie & Eunice (Thompson) Sexton. A celebration of life for Earl Leon Weatherford, age 78, of Poteau, Oklahoma who died Thursday, August 6, 2009 in Poteau, was held Monday, August 10, 2009 at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau, OK. Earl was born March 4, 1931 in Howe, Oklahoma. Earl was an only child, reared by his grandparents, William & Delta McCormick of Howe, Oklahoma. Earl was preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother, Vera McCormick, his father, Wayne Weatherford, and his first wife, Josephine Weatherford. Earl was a member of Howe First Baptist Church and was retired from American Airlines in Tulsa, OK. He loved attending LeFlore Baptist Men’s Brotherhood, loved to tell others about the Lord. Earl also loved listening to good gospel music and country music. He loved roses, having lots of rosebushes at his home in Poteau. Survivors are his loving wife, Iris Weatherford of the home; a daughter, Earlene LaBass of Tulsa, OK; 2 granddaughters, Karri LaBass-Polson of Stillwater, OK & Kimberly LaBass-Carter of Tulsa, OK; 1 great granddaughter, Kennedy Polson of Stillwater, OK; a stepdaughter, Joni Humphries of Broken Arrow, OK; a stepson, Dr. John Stewart II of Tulsa, OK, a brother in law, Kenneth Austin of Marlow, OK; a stepbrother, Gene Goodin of Jefferson, OR; 3 step grandchildren, a host of cousins, other relatives, loved ones, & friends. Earl loved music and video music. The Celebration of Life honored Earl’s life with the music and video music he loved.

Betty Ann Perry

Betty Ann Perry, 65, of Poteau, OK passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 in Poteau, OK. Betty was born on October 5, 1943 in Hammond, IN to JC & Lavisa (Howery) Hicks. She was of the Pentecostal faith. Betty attended school at Cameron, OK where she played basketball, after her graduation, she attended Southeastern State University where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree, then attended Northeastern State University where she obtained her Master’s Degree. Betty taught for 1 year at Midland, Arkansas. She then began teaching at Cameron Public Schools where she taught for 26 years before her retirement. Betty was a wonderful, loving wife, mother, & grandmother. Betty’s parents and a sister, Rita Blair preceded her in death. Betty is survived by her husband, Warren Perry of the home; 2 daughters & a son in law, Annette Haneline & Marla & Curtis Corcoran; 3 grandsons, Brad Bunch; BJ Haneline & Tyler Haneline; 2 granddaughters, Hailey & Holli Corcoran; 3 brothers & sisters in law, Jay & Lilly Hicks of Cameron, OK, John & Roseann Hicks of Collierville, TN, & Jerry Hicks of Cameron, OK; a brother in law, Leroy Blair of Poteau, OK; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives & loved ones and many beloved friends. Funeral services for Betty were held at 2:00 pm Monday, August 10, 2009 at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau, OK with the Reverend Jeff Jensen officiating. Interment followed the services in Oakland Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau, OK. Pallbearers were Brad Bunch, BJ Haneline, Tyler Haneline, Steve Hicks, Brian Hicks, Levi Jensen, & Kevin Morris.

Margie L. (Phillips) Duncan

Margie L. (Phillips) Duncan, 86, of Spiro, OK passed away on August 4, 2009 in Spiro. Margie was born on April 23, 1923 in Bokoshe, OK to Lee E. & Cordelia (Cole) Phillips. She was a dispatcher for a private security firm until her retirement. Margie’s parents and 7 siblings precede her in death. Margie is survived by a daughter, Sunny Ross of Spiro, OK; a grandson & his wife, Adam & Kerry Ross of Houston, Texas; a great grandson on the way; a sister, Delores Tobey of Spiro, OK; numerous nieces, & nephews, many friends & BOWLING BUDDIES. Funeral services for Margie were held at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau, OK with the Reverend Jimmy D. Cook officiating. Interment followed the services in Oakland Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau, OK.

Gerald Carlyle Lang

Gerald Carlyle Lang, 90, of Poteau, OK passed away on August 3, 2009 in Poteau. Gerald was born on April 19, 1919 in Jamestown, New York to William & Mable (Harrison) Lang. Gerald as a World War II veteran, serving in the US Army and a metal estimator until his retirement He was a member of 1st Assembly of God Church in Poteau. He is preceded in death by his wife, Leona on January 22, 2002 and his parents. Gerald is survived by a son & daughter in law, Kevin & Jean Lang of Spiro, OK; a grandson, Paul Bosley of Spiro, OK; 2 granddaughters, Sheila Taylor of Jacksonville, AR & Theresa Webster of Spiro, OK; a stepdaughter, Jesse Milburn of Shady Point, OK; 3 step granddaughters, Shannon Helstein & Angelina Milburn both of Shady Point, K & Dawn Dexter of Warwick, RI; 9 step great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; numerous other relatives & loved ones & many beloved friends. Funeral services for Gerald were held at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 8, 2009 at First Assembly of God Church in Poteau, OK with the Reverend Keith Williams officiating. Iva Nell Phillips

Iva Nell Phillips, 69, of Summerfield, OK passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2009 in Summfield, OK. Iva Nell was born on October 14, 1939 in Tuskahoma, OK to B. C. & Mae (Adams) Carpenter. She was a waitress and general laborer. Her parents; a grandson, Alan Loomis; her brother, Richard Carpenter; and a nephew Donald Carpenter precede her in death. Iva Nell is survived by her husband, August Phillips, Sr.; a daughter & son in law, Debbie & Clay Cruse of Heavener, OK; 2 sons & daughter in law, Jerry & Bobby Loomis of Glendale & James Loomis of Summerfield; 5 sisters, Retha Dehart of Barling, AR; Iva Brown of Aledo, TX; Goldie Hollan of Reichert, OK; Janice Talbert & Cheryl Kuhn, both of Little Rock, AR; a brother & sister in law, Alton & Kathy Carpenter of Summerfield, OK; a sister in law, Beulah Carpenter of Summerfield, OK; numerous other relatives & loved ones and many beloved friends. Ruthie "Kay" Marsh

Kay Marsh, 58, of Poteau, OK passed away Thursday, July 30, 2009 in Fort Smith, AR. Kay was born June 3, 1951 in Spiro, OK to Lee & Polly (Sutton) Williams. Kay was a homemaker. She attended First Church of the Nazarene in Poteau, OK. She had served proudly on the Poteau City Council for 15 years; was President of the Band Boosters & Quarter Note Club, a home room mother a number of times; a member of the women's ministry at the Nazarene Church and a long time supported of Poteau Pirate Football and other activities. Survivors include her husband, Jim Marsh of the home; 2 sons and daughter in law, Jay Marsh of Bixby, OK, Joey & Kasey Marsh of Poteau, OK; 2 daughters & sons in law, Jennifer & Eric Lamb of Poteau, OK, Jill & Michael Moss of Poteau, OK; sister & brother in law, Ruby & Carl Zinn of Amity, AR; brother & sister in law, Tommy & Darlene Williams of Rogers, AR; 7 grandchildren, Krisie Moss, Abbi Marsh, Tori Marsh, Mason Marsh, James Moss, Brendon Marsh, & Amelia Moss. Services will be 2 pm, Sunday, August 2, 2009 at First church of the Nazarene in Poteau, OK with Rev. David Gordon & Rev. Richard Dickinson officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Poteau, OK. Pallbearers: Jonathan Clark, John Boevers, Louis Gill, Paul Quirk, Mark Pollard, Jeff Shockley, Podie Meeks, Danny Holdman, & Robert Swinford. Honorary pallbearers: Poteau Police Department. The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 pm, Saturday, August 1, 2009 to visit with relatives & friends.
