Sarah Jane Pope, 95, of Bokoshe, Oklahoma passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2009 in Spiro, Oklahoma. Sarah was born on September 26, 1914 in Sparta, Tennessee to Beecher & Maridan (Selby) Kinnard. Sarah was a Free Will Baptist & a cook. She was a loving caregiver who loved cooking and going to auctions.
Sarah is survived by a son & daughter in law Wesley & Shannon Pope; her grandchildren, Lisa & Standly Casey, Chase & Megan Pope, Royce & Sharla Bilyeu, Brian & Brandy Bilyeu, & Kevin Bilyeu; 8 great grandchildren; numerous other relatives & loved ones and many beloved friends.
Memorial services for Sarah were held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Vineyard Community Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas with Kevin Beck officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau, OK.

Earl W. Crowder, 82, of Red Oak, OK passed away Friday, December 25, 2009 in Talihina, OK. Earl was born in Hughes, OK on August 20, 1927 to Robert & Fannie (Hardin) Crowder. Earl attended school in Hughes & Fanshawe, He married Bertha Herrington on January 26, 1979 in Reno, NV. He was a veteran of the US Air Force attaining the rank of Staff Sgt. during WW II before his discharge on August 12, 1949. He joined the Sailor’s Union of the Pacific on December 2, 1975. He loved reading, ballgames, & helping his family & friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bruce Crowder; and brothers Herbert & Derl (twin).

Rosie Lee Thomas, 79, of Poteau, OK passed away Friday, December 25, 2009 in Ft. Smith, AR. Rosie was born July 31, 1930 in Kinta, OK to Walter & Lula (Canida) Upton. She was a dietician. Rosie was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Sylvester & Franklin Upton; 2 great grandsons, Zach Kincaid & Payden Grayson; and a son in law, James Grayson.

Ellen Crawford Tiffee, 87, of Poteau, OK (recently of Fayetteville, AR) passed away December 24, 2009 in Springdale, AR. She was born June 4, 1922 in Monroe, OK to Hubert B. & Elva Lou (Lowrance) Crawford. Ellen was a charter member of Friendship Baptist Fellowship in Rock Island, OK. She was a secretary for LeFlore County Farm Bureau for years. She married Harlan Tiffee Sr. on March 1, 1944. Ellen’s husband of 65 years, Harlan Tiffee Sr. & her parents preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son & daughter in law, Harlan Jr. & Lucille Tiffee of Fayetteville, AR; grandsons and their wives, Kelly & Pam Tiffee, Kevin & Hillaree Tiffee of Ft. He fostered 72 children; one special foster child Gena Jones & her daughter Glenda of Tulsa. He was married to Glenda M. Sisson for 32 years. He had a very special friend, Rev. Lee Vaughn. Robert was an oil field worker. Joe Paul Hemphill
Joe Paul Hemphill, 83, of Poteau, OK passed away Monday, December 21, 2009. He was born in Monroe, OK September 6, 1926 to Joseph Braxton & Bertha (Cagle) Hemphill.
Joe Paul was a member of Southside Baptist Church of Poteau, OK. He was a veteran of the US Navy and a longtime administrator until his retirement. Hemphill's list of accomplishments, memberships and awards is quite extensive. They include: Served 19 years on the Board of Directors of KI BOIS Community Action Foundation; Served 10 years on KEDDO (Kiamichi Economic Development District of Oklahoma) Board of Directors; Served 20 years as a member of the Oklahoma Education Association; Served 10 years on Higher Education Alumni Council; Member Howe Masonic Lodge - Master Mason; 32nd Degree Mason - McAlester Consistory
Served 37 years as member of Poteau Chamber of Commerce. During that time he served on the Board of Directors, served as Board President and was Executive Director for two years; Received Poteau Chamber of Commerce President's Award in 1983.
Named 1984 Poteau Man of the Year; First building at CASC was named Hemphill Hall after his retirement in 1988 following 20 years of service to the college; while as CASC he served as a teacher, first Dean, Athletic Director, Vice President for Student Affairs and Vice President for Academic Affairs; Served 20 years as member of Poteau Rotary Club. Served on Board of Directors and President. Received the Paul Harris Fellow Award in 1987; Served 22 years as Poteau City Councilman; Served as Chairman of the LeFlore County Democrat Party from 1965 until 1967; Served as campaign chairman in LeFlore County for Governor Raymond Gary, Governor David Hall and Governor David Walters; Served 10 years as board member of Poteau Summer Youth program; Managed Poteau Summer Youth Program for two years; Member LeFlore County Historical Society; Served 20 years as chairman of the LeFlore County Heart Fund Drive; Served 20 years as Poteau Community Chest Board Chairman; Inducted into Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1992; Received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1998

Marie "Riki" Walker
Marie “Riki” Walker, 92, of Bethany, OK passed away Monday, December 7, 2009. She was born in Nacogdoches, TX on February 26, 1917, to Clebourn & Emma (Howard) Alders. Riki was a retired state employee. Riki and 12 siblings were raised by her parents on a 160 acre farm. Riki was an advocate of education, attending Stephen F. Foster College where she was her cheerleading squad captain. She took delight in her accomplishments winning many tennis titles with other countries while in college. She later attended Texas University where she earned her Masters Degree in Sociology and up to her Psychology Degree at Tahlequah State. Riki was known for her wit and vivacious personality. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Freeman Walker. Riki was a member of the Crossroads Cathedral and took pride in the fact that she read the Bible through four times. She will be dearly missed and completely lovingly missed by all who knew her.

Emery L. Rooney, 90, of Panama, OK passed away Monday, December 7, 2009 in Ft. Smith, AR He was born December 22, 1918 in Fidelity, AR to John E. & Adelia (Bagley) Rooney. Emery was retired from the Civil Service. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He was on the Battleship Maryland when it was bombed in Pearl Harbor. He was an excellent carpenter. He liked fishing, hunting, listening to gospel music, and building things. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters, and 2 brothers.

Betty Jean Logan, 84, of Tulsa, OK (formerly of Poteau, OK) passed away Sunday, December 6, 2009, in Tulsa. She was born in Poteau, OK on August 29, 1925 to Marcus & Jeanette (Cummings) Hoyle. Betty was a retired insurance agent. Betty was born and raised in Poteau and graduated from Poteau High School in 1943. She married her husband Bill Logan in 1950. They worked together at Logan Insurance Agency for 30 years. She was a member of First Christian Church in Poteau, OK for over 70 years where she played the organ for 25 of those years. She loved her daughter and granddaughters dearly, they were the light of her life and her first thoughts were always of them. She was so excited to have a great grandbaby due in February. She loved her dog Babe, who was her best friend. Betty was the best Nanna and the best mother and will be missed very much. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Logan and her parents.
Survivors include her daughter, Leslie Gail Logan King of Tulsa, OK; granddaughters, Megan King Branagh & husband John of Walnut Creek, CA and Whitney Claire King of Dallas, TX; sister and brother in law, Anabel & Bill Gillham of Fort Worth, TX; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and loved ones; many beloved friends.
Services will be held 10 am, Thursday, December 10, 2009 at the First Christian Church, Poteau, OK with Rev. Dennis Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Poteau, OK. Opal Stewart Pierce
Opal Stewart Pierce, 77 was born in Hanna, Ok and passed away at Knothole, OK on Dec. 5 2009. She was married to James R. Pierce of Knothole, OK and they celebrated their 61st Wedding anniversary in 2009. She was a 30 year member of Calvary Assembly of God Church in Poteau, OK and a 25 year member of the Cameron Homemaker’s Club. She assisted her husband in teaching ceramics at Pocola Adult Education night classes and worked at the Pocola Head Start for several years.

Opal loved flowers and had such a green thumb that she once dropped a handful or uprooted aloe vera plants into an empty plant container and the plants not only survived, but thrived.
She was a gifted artisan, doing ceramics, and taking ribbons at both Poteau and Arkansas-Oklahoma State Fairs. She loved to quilt and embroider and could can anything James could grow in his garden – averaging 1000 jars per year over her lifetime – not including jelly which, she said, disappeared so quickly she was always needing to make more.
She is preceded in death by granddaughter, Darla Goude and grandson, Brian Ollar, and daughter in law, Verna. Opal will be greatly missed. The family will visit with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 pm.

Harlan Tiffee, age 87, of Poteau, OK (recently of Fayetteville, AR) passed away, Thursday, November 26, 2009 in Springdale, AR. The son of James Lewis Tiffee and Opal Johnson Tiffee was born April 26, 1922 near Howe, OK. He served in World War II and was a grocery clerk in Heavener, OK for many years and retired from McAlester Production Credit Assoc. as a field man. He was a charter member of the Friendship Baptist Fellowship in Rock Island, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Vernice Clark and a brother, Glenn Tiffee. Connie Brown Wiles, 71, of Panama, OK passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2009 in Ft. Smith, AR. Connie was born in Poker Bend, OK on September 12, 1938, to James & Ruth Ellen (Brown) Brown. She worked for KiBois and was the Poteau Food Bank Manager. She was preceded in death by her parents. Connie loved the outdoors, flowers, gardening, and helping others. She always looked out for others. She also loved music and playing piano.

Thomas Arthur Cherry
Thomas Arthur Cherry, born July 5, 1912 in Huntington, Arkansas passed away on Friday, November 20, 2009 in Poteau. He was the only child of Thomas Arthur Cherry and Rhoda Pearl Hodges Cherry. Tom graduated Mansfield High School in 1930 and attended the University of Arkansas where he was a member of Theta Kappa Nu fraternity. In 1933 he left the University to go into retail business with his father and a cousin in Mansfield, AR. Later he worked for Reynolds Davis Wholesale Grocery in Ft. Smith, managed Ouachita Grocery in Camden, AR then moved to Poteau in 1959. The business which he started, owned and operated with his son Steve, Cherry Wholesale Grocery closed in 1986.
Tom was a loyal member of Kiwanis Club for over 50 years, and a long-time member and worker of the United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men's organization. He is well known for his ability to sell large quantities of Pancake Breakfast tickets for both Kiwanis and Methodist Men. He was an extremely loyal Arkansas Razorback fan and followed all Arkansas athletics.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Neal Jones Cherry, two daughters, Carol Landfair and Linda Roseman. He is survived by two sons Tom Cherry and his wife Norma of St. Simon's Island, Georgia and Steve Cherry and his wife Gloria of Poteau, and one son-in-law, Robert Landfair of Tillar, AR. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday, November 27, at 2 pm at the United Methodist Church in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home. Ira Edward Hughey
Ira Edward Hughey, 97, of Dewey, Oklahoma, formerly of Poteau, OK passed away November 15, 2009 in Dewey, Oklahoma. Ira was born on February 6, 1912 in Mena, Arkansas to Albert & Minnie (Tatum) Hughey. He was an auto mechanic for many years In the Poteau area and a World War II veteran of the US Navy. He was an avid hunter & fisherman. Ira’s wife of 76 years Katherine Hughey; his parents & 2 sisters preceded him in death.
Ira is survived by his daughter Kay (Hughey) Riling & her husband Gene Riling of Bartlesville, OK; a son & daughter in law, Ronald Edward & Carol Hughey of Montoursville, PA; 4 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; numerous other relatives & loved ones; & many beloved friends.

F.L.HOLTON JR.
F.L. Holton Jr., 90, died at his home in Poteau, Sunday, November 15, 2009. He was born in Cameron, OK on November 10, 1919 to F.L. & Eva Holton.
His philanthropy, business sense, and civic involvement made him an eastern Oklahoma legend. He remained actively involved in local business and civic activities, serving as President of Holton Stores, Holton Cattle Company, Chairman of Central National Bank of Poteau and on the Carl Albert State College Board of Regents. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Captain in the United States Army Air Corp.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years Genevieve, three children, Linda Lynch and her husband Bob of Tulsa, Steve Holton and his wife Pam of Poteau and Deborah Gentry and her husband Sam of Poteau; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Lois Blasdel of Woodward and was preceded in death by his sister Allene Conn.
F.L. graduated from Poteau High School in 1937 and received his degree in Business Administration from Oklahoma A&M College in 1941. After World War II, he returned to Poteau where he joined his father in expanding family businesses that would include a supermarket, hardware and furniture store, department store, retail feed store, and a Pontiac and International dealership.
He ran a large cow-calf operation, pioneered the development of the poultry industry in Eastern Oklahoma and founded Holton Mills to manufacture feed for the broiler and cattle industry.
In 1954, Holton was named to the Board of Directors of Central National Bank. In 1978 he was elected Chairman. Under his leadership, CNB continuously ranked as one of the highest performing banks in Oklahoma.
F.L. was one of Poteau’s outstanding civic leaders for over 60 years and was known as the area’s greatest “ambassador”. He served in leadership positions in the Poteau Rotary Club, Poteau Chamber of Commerce and Poteau Industrial Authority.
His commitment to higher education spanned four decades. He was a charter member of the Board of Regents of Carl Albert State College that was formed in 1971. He served under Governors Boren, Nigh, Bellmon, Walters, Keating and Henry and was in his fifth seven year term. He had the honor of being the oldest and longest serving regent in the state of Oklahoma.
He served 20 years on the Board of Trustees for Phillips University in Enid and was board chairman for four years. He was a charter member of the Board of Governors for the OSU Development Foundation, serving on that board for 19 years. He served 20 years as a College of Business Associate at OSU and was inducted into the university’s College of Business Hall of Fame. In 1990 the OSU Alumni Association honored him with the Alumni Service Award for his contributions to OSU and higher education in Oklahoma. He was also honored that year with the Rotary International Paul Harris Award.
In 1992 he was the first recipient of the Poteau Lifetime Contribution award and in 1993 he was inducted into the CASC Hall of Fame. In 1997 the Holton family established the F.L. Holton Endowed Professorship and the 33,000 square foot CASC business center is named in his honor.
He was an active member of the First Christian Church of Poteau. For many years he taught a Sunday School class, served as Board Chairman, was an Elder and was named Layman of the Year for Oklahoma Christian Churches.

Ruby D. Barcheers Lockaby, 76, of Pocola, OK formerly of Panama, OK passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in Pocola, OK. Ruby was born on May 19, 1933 in Bonham, Texas to Jepsy Walter & Fannie Myrtle (Bost) Workman. She was a follower of her Lord Jesus Christ and a homemaker. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Chester Lee Barcheers; a daughter, Brenda Gay Barcheers; 9 siblings; and her parents.

Lille Mae Smith
Lillie Mae Smith, 81, of Houston, TX, formerly of Wister, OK passed away Friday, November 6, 2009 in Houston. Lillie was the oldest of 10 children and daughter of the late John & Mertice (Smith) Toler. She was the loving wife of George A. Smith and they had been married 25 years at his passing. Lillie was born in Leland, MS and was raised on a small farm outside of Greenville, MS where she met her husband, George. Lillie married George in April 1948 and they moved to Wister, OK shortly thereafter and bought a farm 4 miles west of Wister. Lillie was a homemaker as well as worked as a poultry and cattle farmer outside of Wister for 54 years, retiring in 2002. Lillie received the "Grower of the Year" award on one occasion by OK Farms. Her sister, Winnie Mae Williams preceded her in death in May 2009. Lillie was a member of the Wister Extension Homemaker's Service Club, having served as president of the club. She had a passion for sewing and was an excellent cook and baker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Poteau at the time of her passing, however, for most of her life she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wister.
Survivors include her 3 daughters, Louise Bernadine Nichols and husband, Jim of Houston, TX, Georgia Mae Skocdopole & husband, Royce of Bixby, OK, Loretta Diane Weibel and husband, Stuart of Flower Mound, TX; 1 grandson, Brent Skocdopole of Mounds, OK, 6 granddaughters, Christie Holt of Southlake, TX, Memory Wortham of Forney, TX, Courtney Ebeier of Houston, TX, Andrea Javersak of McAlester, OK, Laurie Ford of Arlington, TX, Elizabeth Echternach of Grapevine, TX; 13 Great Grandchildren; 4 brothers, John Toler Jr., James, John Ellen and Sammy; 4 sisters, Sara Jane Huckeby, Ina Mae Lynchard, Jean Dillon and Louise Chavers; other relatives & loved ones many beloved friends.

Iva Louise (Edgmon) Mills, 73, of Wister, OK passed away Saturday, October 31, 2009 in Wister. She was born in Sallisaw, OK on March 21, 1936 to Brex & Beaulah (Ellis) Edgmon. Louise loved sewing, painting, her flower garden and collecting 'special' rocks. She was a homemaker. Daughter, Karri & son, Ronnie and her parents preceded her in death.

Jimmie Charles Martin, 67, of Shady Point, OK passed away Thursday, October 22, 2009 in Shady Point, OK. He was born in Buck Creek (Panama), Oklahoma on December 10, 1941, to Otto & Mary (Wiles) Martin. Jimmie attended Barber School. After getting out of high school he joined the Army then worked on the pipeline for 18 years as an x-ray technician before becoming a swine farmer. Jimmie loved playing music, hunting, fishing, cooking & gardening. He was known for his great fudge. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son and an infant daughter.

Kenneth James Clark, 64, of Bokoshe, OK passed away Monday, October 19, 2009 in Spiro, OK. Kenneth was born April 6, 1945 in Bolivar, PA to Lawrence W. & Ruth (Brett) Clark. Kenneth was a coal miner where he served as a foreman for over thirty years. Prior to his mining experience he worked for Ford Motor Co. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Phyllis Crusan; brother, Samuel Clark; and son in law, Kenneth Orton.

Thomas Jacob Worley III
Thomas J. Worley III, 57 of Shady Point Ok passed away Tuesday Oct. 6, 2009. He was born Nov. 12, 1951 in Camp Crowder, Missouri to Thomas Jacob Worley Jr. and Hannah Edith Worley. The family settled first in Norman, OK (where his father attended the University of Oklahoma) and then to Oklahoma City in 1953 eventually having two younger sons. Tom graduated from Capitol Hill High School where he discovered a life-long passion for music regularly performing in choral groups and church choirs throughout his life. He was blessed by the birth of his daughter Rebecca Ruth Worley on Aug. 7, 1971. Tom met Kathryn Lynn Hood in Nov. 1977 and they married on Nov. 17, 1979 residing in Oklahoma City until 1993 then moving to Shady Point, OK, becoming proud members of the First Christian Church in Poteau and Tom joined the church choir. Tom shared Kathy’s love of dogs, together breeding and showing award winning white German Shepherds. Tom worked 28 years for AT&T as a Communication Service Tech until retirement in 2006. Following retirement from AT&T he was employed by Exterran, and Service Compression. Tom was a fervent sports fan and especially passionate about OU Football with his earliest memories those of witnessing the Sooners record 47 game winning streak from 1953 to 1957. Being an avid classic car enthusiast, he enjoyed building, owning and showing various 70’s model muscle cars. The most important part of Tom’s life was his devotion to and enjoyment of his cherished family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Jacob Worley Jr. and survived by beloved wife, Kathryn (Hood)Worley of Shady Point; treasured daughter, Rebecca (Worley)Elrod of OKC; mother, Hannah Worley of OKC; brothers, John Worley & wife Sherry of Princeton, TX, William Worley & wife Erin of Yukon, OK; Granddaughters, Tara Elrod and Heaven Elrod of OKC, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family including John & Barbara (Hood)Garrard, Ralph & Debbie Hood, Bobby & Laura Anderson and Rick & Jamie Johnston.
